Freezing / Driver Advice

Thread Starter
Hi,

I just got a 8887, and HT was enabled. Command and Conquer Generals is freezing on me, and I'm thinkning that HT may be the culprit. I also have DX 9a installed, but now I know I should have stuck with 8.1

Does anyone have any advice on what drivers should be installed with regards to Video after I format and reinstall? Sager's, or Catalyst 3.2 off ATI's website? I think they have 3.4 now, actually. For stability in gaming, which should I use. With the TV tuner, since HT is disabled, can I use the drivers that came with the Sager, or should I get the latest off AverTV's website?

If you search around here, you will find that HT and Dx9 do not play well for 90% (made up stat) of the people.

Either disable HT or reinstall OS to dx8.1.

I tried disabling HT, and Windows wouldn't boot. It seemed like I would need to reinstall the OS after disabling HT, but from your reply it seems like I may not need to. Is that true?

(I'm not trying to second guess you, I'm just a n00b on Sagers)

Thanks for your response!

Heh, oops... sorry, I forgot to mention that (however, search around here for that, too, and you'll see a couple of ways to re-do windows w/ HT on/off).

One way some people did was to turn off HT, then do a Windows REPAIR (boot off OS CD, and select REPAIR instead of REINSTALL).

Personally, I always REINSTALL, as it's cleaner.

Maybe because they do not need hyperthreading? I didn't NEED hyperthreading, it was sort of a bonus (at the time I bought it, HT was not out).

It is pretty disappointing, but perhaps with future versions of DirectX and/or BIOS/System patches, they can get things to work... right now, I am playing more games than video crunching, so HT is out (plus I want to see if it makes things run smoother).

All about testing it,

Wow...you must be loaded myrkat...

thats a lot of $$$ over the 2.8Ghz version...Hmmm...

But you missed the main point I wanted to project - why do they sell a HT enabled product that doesnt work the way it should. Judging by the amount of trouble some of the 8887 and 5670 users are going through I dunno if Intel and Microsoft got the HT thing sorted out entirely...

weird folks

I really don't think HT is the problem with all of these systems. If you like at everyone they all have DX 9 installed. I really think it's DX 9 to blame because DX 8.1 works well with HT but DX 9 does not. HT is working properly, its DX 9 that isn't.

Not true. I've been having problems with HT and DX8.1 as well.

I haven't been able to game for an hour or more, because of this problem.

Always freezes like clock work in games, just when im having fun too

I also have had it freeze while playing dvd rips and dvd discs. ( maybe 10 times now).

I have had the 5670 a little over a month now as well.

Sorry for feeding the fire, but who else am I going to share this with?
