I called Justin at Proportable because I needed some info on Asus products (since i love them so much) and he has some interesting news that i thought i might share with you all....This is coming from memory so i am sorry if i miss details or something like that.
  • 1st....The W1 will probably never get the tv tuner kit in the US. The US office isn't happy with how it works.

2nd.....The price for the W1 is $2,399.. set by Asus so EVERYONE has to sell it for the exact same price that was established.

3rd.....The W1 isn't getting anything new at all.. period.. end of story.

4th.....There is a lower end system coming out... but the M5/M6/W1 are going to be the high end and untouched through the end of the year.

5th....The L5 (p4 based system) will get a video upgrade.... it's 128mb ati 9600 now will be a 128mb 9700.... They will be avail. in August.

6th....Basically nothing new for the rest of the year because of waiting for alviso. Which will prob miss it's January target release period.

7th....For those of you looking for custom W1's don't get your hopes up. Because and customized W1 that you purchase voids its warranty and that is the asus global warrranty.

8th.....Asus will NOT warranty anything through the end user

Seems pretty accurate, although some shops will customize and warranty it themselves. I wouldn't want to void the 2 year global Asus warranty, either, it's very convenient for travellers.

They're right that it comes in one configuration.

The price you have isn't 'set by Asus', but is a suggested resell price of 2399.
The $2399 doesn't allow much profit, so you'll see most resellers keep it there.

Thanks for the rest of the info, very informative.

Sorry, but what do you mean by Asus won't warranty anything under the end user?
Thanks for clarification.

I think that means if you change stuff. I know on my w1 if I change out proc, or hard disk, and I return it for service for whatever reason, asus wont like it.

So... keep your original eq. Swap it out beforehand. If you feel the need to change stuff out that badly.

For me, the config was fine.

"through the end user".... Meaning you HAVE TO go through your reseller for all service etc you can't just go straight to Asus... so pick a good one

I believe that latter statement about the warranty, is totally incorrect. Let me explain it as I have heard it.

The W1 comes in one config. That config is warranteed for 2 years through Asus, from the end user, globally. Now, if you CHANGE that config, you void the warranty.

If a reseller sells em with a different config, then yes, you will need to go through them as Asus wont support thier work.

I have a w1, stock, with a 2 year global warranty, entirely useable by myself. (the warranty service)

I heard from a Asus USA rep that the hard drive and memory are considered user-serviceble and will not void the warranty if changed. Now this is the same guy who told me that the US will not be getting the TV Tuner version of the W1, and this call was quite some while ago, before that information became widely known. So I think his info is pretty accurate.

i don't think so... the hardare user manual states:
"WARNING! End-user removal of the CPU or hard disk drive will void the warranty."

so unless they put it in writing... i think it's safe to assume u can't change any of it urself
