Partitioning XP

Is there a simple way to partition XP Pro? I can't seam to get the windows method to work.

I'd like 3 partions

1 for windows and programs
1 for all of my media files
1 for general data

I tried reinstalling and partitioning then but it won't partition there either.

You cant get the windows thing to work?? Why thats the first thing you do when you install your operating system...

Did you install the OS yourself??

In which case check out Adam's instructions elsewhere on the forums - he has that step in the walkthrough...

I installed XP myself. I have not seen Adam's instructions but I did install the drivers in the order the instrustions said to.

If you installed drivers, you passed it ;-)

It is one of the first steps, and I'm going to assume you hit enter and partitioned the whole drive.

Now it might just be easier to install partition magic or eq.

Otherwise, reload OS, when you see select a partition... delete it and create away.

yeah you've passed the step

OK here goes :-

re-install OS again - I dont really like those partition magic etc. programs...

Here is the link you require : http://sagerforums.com/showthread.ph...alling+Windows

USE SLOW FORMAT SINCE THIS IS A NEW HDD. DO NTFS(SLOW) OR NORMAL OR WHATEVER IT IS CALLED.

it will take time but the next time round you can use quick format.

You will come to a step :-

http://www.pctorque.com/misc/HT/21.jpg

Here you have to delete the existing partition and then create the new partitions from scratch. If yours is a 57GB HDD like mine then you will see 57232 for drive C. Delete this partition and then create a new one : THIS WILL BE THE PARTITION FOR THE OS and I recommend selecting 10GB for the OS.

To calulate the space - use 1024 as the multiplier. 1024 times X where X = the amount of space in GB that you want to allocate for that drive.

First set 10240 for the OS (10GB partition)
Then create the rest of the partitions
DONT FORGET TO CREATE A PARTITION RIGHT AT THE END. YOU SHOULD ONLY SEE :-

UNPARTITIONED SPACE = 8MB

AT THE END.

If you see UNPARTITIONED SPACE = 12204 or something then you can create one more partition. Otherwise that space will not be accessible to you.

After installing windows (following this step) and once you start windows - install the drivers and then format each drive that you created.

Once this is done you have to format each of your drives before you can use them. You can do this from within windows - Just right click D and E or whatever and select FORMAT and give the drive a name. The next time you install OS you can check the QUICK FORMAT box.

Best of luck...

LOL

I did that too...had a whopper 57GB C drive the first time. I have since then installed OS at least 15 times you'll get used to it and you'll start wanting to do it once every week - try to do it once a month - it will be a hard struggle against your concience but its well worth it to hold off another OS install!!

AAaargh just talking about it makes me wanna do the OS again NOW - somebody stop me or at least give me a job where I can install OS all day long

Oh, and don't activate until about a week or so before the 30 days is up, as I've installed my OS more than once every thirty days, and I kept activating it... this time, I'm holding off (I recently turned off HT and went back to the default Sager website ATI drivers).

I'll probably re-do it all again within the 30-day thing anyway...

What??

No kiddin!?!? Whats their faulking problem anyway?? Whats in it for them to tell me how many times I can install my OS!?!? WHy cant I install my OS on multiple systems?? If I build two computers I have to buy two $300.00 Windows Xp Media?? I dont think so...

If they continue in this vein I will have to move on to Linux or MacOS...definitely MacOS...

Will it be silly is I said " 'I am starting' to hate microsoft??" I am sure there are many ready with AK47's and Bazooka's assembled outside Microsoft waiting to give them a piece of their mind...

My biggest complaint about xp is how often it phones home... U know they have every bit of info about me, my life, my surfing habbits. And it seems if I try to stop it via firewall then I have other problems. Granted I use there products msn messenger and I/E. But what kills me is the fact that messenger goes out and sets its own ports and protocals and fowards it to itself... I know why do I use it? cause most of the girls I talk to use it

lol
I never allowed it to set itself up on my system...

Still XP is great for games...when I get out of this game playing frame of mind I am getting a Mac...but for the moment and for the next few years i'll be a pc user...

Shall we get rid of Bill Gates and install Jay Leno as CEO of MS?? we might actually find something sensible happening there afterwards...

especially if the guitar dude strikes the right chords

How do you know if XP is phoning home or not? is this some process ?? can we kill it if we identify which one it is??

Simple: Immediately after re-installing (the next time you do), install a FIREWALL like Zone Alarm Pro or Sygate...

Then wait and watch. Press F1 to bring up system help... nice, eh? You know how many things go through "Generic Host Process" ? Me either; and why does it need to act as a server?

Run DLL as an APP? Why does that need to access the network?

giving this a shot in the morning...too bad Zone Alarm is not free...

Do you know a decent and free software firewall??
I thought it was free for personal use, but maybe this has changed. Or maybe the "free" version is not adequate.

Oh wow!! getting it right now...

I have a rather old OS (2 weeks which is old in my books) can I still run the software effectievely or is it best used after a fresh install like you mentioned in the other post??
You might want to check "Sygate Personal Firewall 5.0". It's free for a non-Pro version also. I used to have Zone Alarm in my system for awhile, but it's a bit buggy with Windows XP and it hog the system resource.
Sygate is much smaller, faster and more stable than Zone Alarm.... Try it out.
One more thing I hate about Zone Alarm is once you install it, you won't be able to get rid of it unless you fresh re-install the whole system. They have an uninstall option, but some of its functions are still embeded in the system.

Yeah, if you have no firewall installed, just install one, but DO NOT LET IT AUTOMATICALLY decide what access to give: I.e. make sure YOU have the YES/NO say on all programs.

Then, as you do different things, it will pop up and ask if you want to allow access / server rights, etc.

It will be tricky with BF1942, as sometimes it doesn't show the popup (BF's graphics overrule the OS, it seems), so you may want to point to BF1942.exe and allow it access manually before running it. (just a hint)
