What's going on with the Acer 2012WLMi on newegg.com? - Page 6

post #101 of 124
Didn't get a Dothan, but sweet laptop nonetheless.

I doubt they will put Dothan in this laptop when they have the 2025 series for 2200 with the ATI 9700 128.

smilepak - Shanto20 is referring to the fact that a few users claimed to have recieved 2012WLMi laptops from NewEgg which were shipped with a 1.5Ghz Dothan CPU.

I just received two Acer 2012's, one for me and one for my friend. The good news in addition to them both being very nice is that they both have Dothans! Both use Bios version 1.3, and both check out with 2mb of L2 cache as read by CPU-Z. CPU-Z also says that they are both Dothans.

Talk about a sweet deal!

thanks for the help. Typing on mine now

no dothan here but still happy. Will post 3d mark03 numbers when my download finishes.

I installed and played Doom 3 last night:

1024x768 with Medium settings was playable (a little bit jerky, but nothing that really bothered me) - automatically stretched to full screen (widescreen)

No overclocking of the radeon 9700 required (yet )

Please note that I have 1gb of ram, so this may make a difference.

I just started playing it today and I have had very similar results. Only thing I don't like is 1024x768 doesn't look very sharp. 800x600 is actually what I've been playing on so I can read the text. At 800x600 I haven't noticed a slowdown.

Going to be upgrading to the 7K60 when I get home in an hour or so and I'll hopefully be playing this again before bed tonight. Fun game.

I'm feeling kinda frustrated as the last 4 or 5 reviews on newegg claim to have gotten dothans.....damnit, whatever.

Are the dothans only coming from California? I got mine from NJ.

I'm not sure what other current laptops are like, but the 2012WLMi does not have any cooling for the hd as far as I can tell (it is essentially in it's own little plastic section with a connector and no fans)

The 4200rpm drive in my 2012WLMi runs about 40-46 degrees C when sitting, running Bittorrent and web surfing (goes up to 50+ sometimes when unrarring large files... but quickly cools down again)

When idle it dips under 40 and sits at maybe 38.
Just did a little test with the 7k60 Hitachi and running defrag for 15 minutes upped the temperature from 38c o 44c. Now just cruising around the 'net it's dropped down to 41c in about 2 minutes.

Noise is not an issue. It's a little more quiet the the stock 4200RPM drive.

Performance wise... nice!

Excellent news Jeff!

Do you remember roughly what temps you had in the same situations with the original hd?

I'm really ready to pounce on the 7k60, but I'm looking to buy an hd mp3 player too.... and basically it has come down to one or the other

To be honest... I never really noticed. I just wanted to make sure this new drive wasn't over heating.

Jeff.... just got one question..... is it *really* worth it?

Isn't it just typical of my luck.... the lowest UK price has jumped up almost US $20 as soon as the retailer got stock in. (I could have preordered it the day before they got stock)

wow that is a great price on a m10 laptop
awesome choice for someone on a budget

however, maybe because i have a little extra money, i think that it's worth it to pay around $200-300 more to get a system like a cl56, or the new 3790 because you get (based on this price jump):
1) 1.5 --> 1.7 ghz
2) 64 Mb vram --> 128 Mb
3) 4200 --> 5400 rpm
4) wxga --> wsxga+ (3790 only)

worth the money? opinions?

That is entirely up to you. If you can afford the extra $$$ and want slighly better performance, by all means go for it. But as you can see, there are a lot of happy 2012WLMi users

I have to say... the hard drive upgrade made more of a difference than the 1Gb memory upgrade. Now as for if it's worth it or not... from what I've read... a 5400RPM upgrade seems like it'd be the best upgrade for the money. You can get a 40Gb 5400RPM Hitachi for $91 delivered from NewEgg.com. The cheapest 7200RPM drive they have is the 40Gb Hitachi at $140. 7200RPM worth the extra $50... don't know for sure but I doubt it.

I just have this insane habit of upgrading. I've been an avid overclocker/upgrader with desktops and I thought I'd be safe getting this notebook... but I'm not.

I'm definitely upgrading the CPU btw... I haven't made up my mind yet though... the 1.7GHz is a pretty darn good deal. But then the "insane" side of me is saying "go for the 2.0GHz Dothan!!!".

Surely you can force yourself to wait a few months? (I know it is usually easier said than done) because as soon as Intel release the next stepping, I think at 2.13 Ghz, the 2.0 Dothan will drop by at least a couple of hundred dollars straight away.

I used to play the waiting game but it got to the point where I was just always waiting for something. That's boring and you end up waisting lots of time. The way I do it now is that I'm always upgrading and selling off the old equipment. The price difference for waiting and buying something new also holds true for when you try to resell the upgraded part. The only time I've really lost out has been when I hit it at the completely wrong time... I buy when it's high and the price drops before I can sell the "old" part.

The next release of the Dothans are changing the bus right? If so I doubt they will be compatible with the current mobos. (unless someone knows something different)
