i was about to cancel my order with ibuypower but after self debating here it's not worth it.

512 ram? useless for me. i would have to ditch them both just to get 2 512's to get 1 gig.

64 meg vid card? eh... not my idea of a game-able laptop. spreadsheets, fine. surfing, fine. watching divx clip, fine. but i like to do some gaming as well and this doesn't fit my bill.

4200 rpm drive? too slow.

at the end of the day, it's a great laptop for someone who just does the basic; like college students who just writes papers, chats online, and does some research. but for a power user, it comes up short. even if you upgrade it, it's going to cost just as much as another laptop.

Figure if you get a CL56 barebone and upgrade/install the parts yourself, how much would it cost at the end?

i woke up this morning and i am like....screw it! the compaq (sig) will come out cheaper and more powerful after all the upgrades (minus the heat, and battery life).

If i buy the Acer for $1300, I'll need more ram (768) so that means I'll have to ditch one slot for an upgrade, even though its an M11, its 1/2 the vram of my M10, no thanks! I am just overpaying for XP Pro since I will be installing my own OS anyway, i am just overpaying for a 60gb 4200, i'd rather get the 30gb, and when i have the money, buy the 7k60. And a 1.5 P-M just doesn't have the raw juice of a 3ghz Prescott with HT. And mobility isn't my prime factor, I am looking for a solid DTR so the 2-3 hours battery of basic use on the 12cell compaq, not an issue.

Ech...I hate you Americans with your American prices and fantabulous® deals!

For those of you who have ordered, check out this review that I wrote on my 2012WLMi while you're waiting for your new baby: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.aspx?newsID=1957

Thanks for the review Odie, I it saw before I ordered and it defiantely helped me along in the decesion. The price drop was the final clencher.

-wish I bought mine form a shop that would buy back the ram right out of the box though

You are most welcome rev norton.

I went for the 1Gb upgrade as soon as they told me they would buy back the 512mb at pretty much retail price. I think the extra ram makes up for the slower cpu (I ideally wanted a 1.6 or 1.7) in gaming.

I went out to all of the local megastores yesterday just to get a feel for what the brick and mortar places were offering these days. All of the clerks told me that this week starts everyones "back to school" sales jamboree and I am hoping that the competition is what is prompting the price drop. Be optimistic - we are all getting the Dothans

Well I will find out in a couple days...
Well, now it is officially out of stock.

Hmm, well it went out of stock earlier today and an hour later it was back in stock... It says the deal is on till 4pm PST on the 3rd so hopefully it'll be back in stock for any stragglers who haven't placed their order yet

this laptop is a decent configuration for someone who has a nice desktop system but maybe needs a laptop if they travel and like to play games

i agree that this laptop shouldn't be the users only computer if they are into games but this system could play most games reasonably well (with the exception of newer games like Doom 3)

I'll bet it plays Doom fine. I plan to find out so I'll report back after I try.

Cool. Looking forward to this.

Also, I'd like to thank Odie as well because your review of the 2012 was the best on the internet.

With soo much activity, how many 2012s Newegg would have sold over the past few days ?
a 100 ? or more ?
I want a cut of the sales
I wrote to see if they would refund part of the difference between what I spent last week and what they are selling these for now... nope. It was worth the price I paid but getting money back is always nice.

BTW, I'm upgrading the memory to 1Gb later this week and I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster hard drive too. No need really but I'm a bit of a freak with upgrades. Anyone know if you can drop in a faster CPU? The 1.7GHz Dothan looks to be a pretty good deal. (I know I don't need the extra 200MHz... but like I said... I'm a freak! )
Jeff, I didn't look too closely when the shop staff removed the keyboard to install one of my 512mb RAM modules, however there is probably a good chance that the cpu is accessible from under there. No idea whether it is soldered on or just in the socket.

I would be very interested to hear from you (or anyone else with the 2012WLMi) if/when you upgrade the hard drive though. I find the current hard drive to be a little bit slow. I am considering the 60gb 7200rpm Hitachi or the 80gb 5400 rpm hitachi... I've heard that the performance difference is not huge between the two because of the 80gb's higher density. Both are similarly priced here in the UK, the only problem being that the price is quite steep.

Also, to any 2012WLMi owners, please could you try MobileMeter and see if you can get it to report CPU temperatures? I can only get it to report HD temps at the moment.

Thanks in advance,
- Odie

I already ordered the memory and this is the hard drive I'll be getting next week...
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...146-020&DEPA=3

It looks like a CPU replacement is possible I'm just curious if the motherboard will support any upgrade? I've done 100s of desktop upgrades for people but I'm an absolute noob when it comes to notebooks.

I tried MobileMeter also and no CPU temperature. It says something about ACPI has to be fully enabled and as far as I can tell it is(as seen in the hardware profile of XP).

Jeff, nice choice of HD, please do post and let us know how it performs in the 2012 when you get it.

As long as the cpu is not soldered down, then it should be pretty simple to updgrade, the only question is whether the current bios supports the dothan cpus. (my 2012 came with v1.20, how about yours? I don't think the v1.30 bios fixed/changed much...I did not upgrade because I recall that it required a floppy drive....kinda silly when the laptop does not ship with one!)

Now about MobileMeter, that's exactly the same as what it told me, both with a fresh Acer restore, and with a fresh XP Pro oem instsall. I found one program that can measure the cpu temp, but I didn't like the fact that it had to install speciall drivers to do so (similar to motherboard monitor)...I would have really liked to get MobileMeter to work fully because it has a very small resource footprint.

My 2012 came with v1.30 and a Dothan straight from the factory. I will definitely report back after the memory upgrade and then the hard drive upgrade(and then the CPU upgrade if I can talk myself into trying it).

What program reads the CPU's temperature? TIA

I'm pretty sure http://www.hmonitor.com/ worked on my 2012WLMi. Unfortunately it is not free so it didn't last long on my machine.
