8600 OS not booting up. Restarts

I don't know how it happened since I wasn't the one with the laptop at the time that it happened but the laptop keeps on restarting when it gets to the windows boot screen. I decided to see if Dell diagnostic could find a problem and it came up with:

-- DST Short Status Test --
Test Results : fail
Error Code : 1000-0142
Msg : Unit 4 : Drive Self Test failed. Status byte = 79

I don't know why it would say that since it boots up to the windows bootup screen. At the very least, it should have given me a blue sceen instead of instant restart. Anyone know what's wrong with it? I'll have to call Dell up later if nobody has answers, I just don't want to wait on hold.

well there is an option in windows that says on fail, automatically reboot... so it could be getting a potential blue screen but its automatically rebooting because that option is selected. have you tried to get into windows in safe mode yet?

Well I was searching thru dell forum and found someone with a similar problem who said he got a reponse from dell saying "the heads were crashing onto the platters." My brother does play a lot of games while laying on the floor with the laptop diagonally on his lap. I guess the Fujitsu Z40P 40gb 5200 drives aren't too good unless they're laid flat on the table. With that said, I'm not sure if I want the lower 4200rpm drive that they said was standard or the same drive with a chance of the problem reoccuring. Oh the dilemma!

Do you guys think I should ask for a 60gb drive?

Hmmm I called Dell up and they wanted me to send in the whole laptop for a hard drive problem. I have the standard 1 year limited warranty. Is that how it works? I thought I could get them to send me a replacement hd so I can try to recover it. You can only get a replacement on extended warranty? That stinks

EDITED:
N/M... After I let him know what the problem was, he said he was going to have them send me a new replacement hard drive and I have to send in the broken one within 30 days.

WOW I hope this kind of problem is not common.

Hard to guess how many users have brothers who play with their laptops on the floor. Tell him that notebook drives are not shock proof!
