Hard Decision: Acer F3200 of 8003LMi?

I have been all over these boards and other boards looking for the right laptop in my price range, and I came up with the Acer Ferrari 3200 and the Acer TM 8003LMi. I've heard about the F3200's heat problems with it's 64 processor, but I've also heard about the 8003's LCD problems. Just wondering what you guys think would be the best overall. And also which processor is faster, the AMD Mobile 64 2800+, or the Intell Pentium M 1.6GHz?

Thanks

If you're only looking at Acers, you're missing out on a whole universe of additional options.

They've recently come out with the Acer 8006LMi. You should also look at that one.

There's no heat problem on the F3200 with its processor, and its low-power Mobile Athlon 64 2800+ beats the TM8003's Pentium M 1.6GHz hands down. Actually, the overall performance of the F3200 compares directly with the more expensive TM8006 (Pentium M 2.0GHz). The F3200 really rocks performance wise, no doubt about it

I've done extensive research on laptops. Of the two you gave, I would recommend the Acer Ferrari.

If you were to check other laptop with similar configuration, the prices will be at or exceed of the Acer Ferrari 3200.

The only two draws I've seen about it are

1) hard drive is 4200 RPM
2) it comes with two sticks of 256MB rather than 1 stick of 512MB

Otherwise, the paint job is excellent and the speed on it rocks!

The 8003 won't have any LCD problems the Ferrari doesn't have--they almost certainly use the exact same screen.

The battery life on the 8003 is going to be a LOT longer....up to twice as long.

The 8003 has a DVI out rather than VGA out. This is a HUGE bonus if you plan on hooking it up to an external LCD.

The performance on the Ferrari will be a little better in benchmarks than the 8003--whether this is noticeable in day-to-day use is arguable.

The 8006Lmi costs about $500 more than the 8003, and offers all the benefits I've mentioned above, as well as performance that will be on par if not better than the Ferrari.

Besides the paint job and slightly faster CPU (and perhaps the hard drive is 60 vs 80?), the Ferrari has no real benefits over the 8003. However, there are some big benefits (MUCH longer battery life and DVI out especially) that could be very important. For a laptop, especially, I would think battery life is fairly important. They're the exact same price.

No way, I get up to 3.5 hours battery life on my F3200 and there's NO WAY you can get 7 hours battery life on the TM8003. Actually, you're lucky if you manage to get 4.5 hours battery life on it

Thanks a lot for all of the feedback. I'v pretty much decided to go with the Ferrari, but I have one more question. Since it comes with 2x256MB of ram and not 1x512MB, on average, how much do you think it would cost to upgrade to 2x512MB?

Thanks

You could check with egghead.com or check with cruicial.com for the memory. On the average user, the 512MB is plenty to have for a laptop. If you got the extra cash, ofcourse shell out for the 1GB because it actually is pretty good. I got 1.5GB on my desktop and play SWG with two accounts at the same time no problem.

I've heard that the kingston on them aren't too bad either.

Dual battery will get you up to around 7 hours, that will make the laptop pretty heavy

I said UP TO twice. It's not quite fair to compare the Ferrari's best case LCD barely visible with 8003' worse case full brightness+wireless+optical is it? I've heard figures in the 2.0-2.5hr range thrown around for the Ferrari. Likewise, 4-5 hours on the 8003 is not out of the ordinairy.

Don't be silly, I didn't make any such lame comparison.

Well, with conditioning of the battery and with all power saving options properly enabled I have no problems getting about 3 hours battery life with normal use on the F3200:

Yeah, I was looking at Kingston, but they are so expensive. I'm just going to see if the 512 works well for me and take it from there.

Look at the Kingston ValueRam, they are cheaper.

Have a quick look at your easy access ram slot!!! I bought extra ram and then realised on opening the 3200, that i actually had 1 stick of 512mb ram, not 2x256. Unfortunately it was too late to do anything about it, I had to swap out 'both' the sticks anyway....

If you have 1 x 512mb like i did, you can get another 512mb stick and put that in, make sure whatever you get, that you get two sticks from the same company. ( I had bought a 1024mb stick, i thought "yay, i can just slot this in with my 512mb and have 1.5gigs," unfortunately, they wouldn't rn together, so i sold on the original 512mb....
