I was wondering since I got my Dell i600m with a 1024x768 screen, can I hack it to go to a higher resolution? Can it be done?

Unless you can change the number of pixel on the screen..........No way.........

umm....no hacking is needed....right click desktop, go into the settings tab, and you will see a screen resolution changer

I think some of my older notebooks did have the option of going beyond their native resolutions, in which case the desktop was extended beyond the screen in a panning mode. Never used it, though.

The compal 56 can do that. I just saw it in a store the other week. you can pan past the edge of the screen. it was weird.

Abosolutely no way other than getting Dell to install a new LCD screen with a higher resolution for you.

All LCDs work best at their native resolutions. You certainly CANNOT go above ... and once you go below you will start to notice a lot of jaggies (aka the "aliasing" effect)!

I have heard of something where you can make the desktop bigger than the screen, and by moving the mouse to the sides/top/bottom, you can essentially pan around on your desktop.

This is what I mentioned in my former post.

That's not the same as increasing the resolution of the LCD screen. That's just a virtual effect done using software.

Yes, but I think ttkgeek may have meant as in go past that whilst all is still visible on one screen, or in a game. In this case it is not possible as the max resolution capability is 1024 x 768 with your screen because this is the amount of physical pixels that you have.... the only option is to get that higher resolution via a virtual desktop as the others mentioned, or to get a new LCD (the SXGA goes up to 1400 x 1050).
