Mayaman2's Big Review of the 4750

post #1 of 624
Thread Starter
I just got my 4750 today, and i will start by talking about the shipping process. it took about 2 weeks for my laptop to ship. my backpack came two days earlier. when i got my sager box, i started going picture crazy. i opened it and there was a bunch of those white foam peanut things, and two other boxes! One was the router box. In the smaller box was my laptop in a ton of protective plastic and foam so it was well secured during the trip. I found all the wires and cds in the included ugly case which may serve as a sleeve. Now that's I have it online I will download all the benchmarks and powernow. The screen is extremely bright and high resolution. However its not to hard to see like wuxga is. I couldn't use my ps2 adapter so i had to use one of the 3 usb ports. This laptop right now is quite comfortably warm, i haven't installed powernow yet so the fan always seems to be on high. the keyboards are kind of soft, but no flex. This laptop is really sturdy and its kind of hard to open the screen. WARNING! This is an ongoing review so it quite a long read.

I got wireless to work. It required to use the windows disks and set up a network section on the disk. download speeds aren't the greatest, but its working and that's what matters. soon i will have some benchmarks ready. i have 2 upcoming ones 3dmark03 patch 340 and aquamark03. the laptop does make your wrists sweat, so I would suggest typing correctly with raised arms. you won't get carpal tunnel either that way.

Alright. Just ran aquamark with quite a few programs in the background running. These are the original drivers scores. 28,787. Gfx 3426, CPU 8998. 8,660,065 tps at 28.79 average fps. I wonder what the omega 4.6 drivers will get. the left palm got a little warmer but the right side was cool to the touch.

it gets rather hot when gaming. only around the w key where the left hand controls. it doesn't feel like its going to burn, but it seems like it might cause the hand to sweat. again the right side doesn't get that warm. the metal gets warm at the top. the 9700 does seem to be a bottleneck. farcry wasn't running at full settings and was kind of jerky. i don't think i have found the sweetspot yet.

in 3dmark03 I got a 3424. And in 3dmark01 se i got a 12,568. Keep in mind this is stocked clocked and with stock drivers. I haven't tried it with the omega drivers yet.

alright i did some overclocking. i clocked it to 526.50/290.25. it ran completely stable on aquamark. 32,272 (gfx 3,933, cpu 8992) 3d mark03 was pretty stable but there was some artifacting on nature. 3980! on 3d mark01 it only artifacted on one of the matrix tests, and again the nature one. 14357.

i have some pictures being sent. a lot are blurry. so i will probably have to take reshots. but some i just can't take a picture of it on because of the poor lighting in my room and older digital camera. if you have more requests for pictures i will gladly take them. i can't seem to fit my sd card in the 4 in 1 reader so i just used my usb sd reader.

I have a wave of pictures coming. If i have request afterward for different views I will gladly accomodate.

the artifacting i saw were really stretched out polygons that formed almost spears. there weren't that many of them, but they were quite noticable. i think they may have been caused since i didn't give enough time between benchmarks for the gpu to cool down.

nice info, keep it comin. glad to hear you finally got it and are happy with it

Just fyi, there seems to be a problem with either the Catalyst's or Omega's that are based off of the 4.6 or 4.7 set. DVD/Video playback is very choppy and cuts in and out. Seems to be a problem with any mobility ati m11. Would be interesting to know if the same problems appears on the 4750. I can verify it happens on the 8790 and people have reported it happening on the 5690. Let us know how they work out for you.

Thank you..now thats the highest i've seen anyone even attempt to over clock the 4750.. Your clock is good..i bet its the heat that made it artifact in nature.. You said it was kind of jerky in Farcry? What kind of settings..fps are you getting? Im getting anxious now to get my credit so I can buy something..Im seriously considering that Dell only for the vid card but that 8790 is sweet...

500 i think would be completely stable to clock it at. When overclocked the laptop becomes almost as loud as my desktop, but the heat doesn't increase that dramatically. only on gaming does heat sometimes bother me, because its seems to be under the w key which tends to be held a lot. i don't think this laptop could give you heat rash so i think its safe for most people. its fan drop speeds very quickly which i find impressive. and the keyboard allows for really fast typing. although its strange to use the shift key because i always seem to want to ctrl a word to cap it.

I let the 5690 run in a loop til it artifact to find the stable clock... at 500/300 I had like 4100 something on 3dmark01 and 32,000 something in aquamark...it would clock higher but I was happy with those scores on my little p4 2.8 I know Amir scores even higher with his p4..higher chip then I had.. Thats why I wonder if its the internal heat...

if the 4750 chassis had cooling like a 8790 I bet someone could hit over 4500 in 3dmark. Maybe once my warranty expires I'll take off the bottom panel and get a liquid nitro system runnin on the cpu and gpu hehe.

Would it be safe if I did 513/283? I played counterstrike for a few hours on max settings and the temperature only(?) got to 62. Also, I can't run far cry on high settings with my current settings.

Edit: I got 3712 on 500/270 settings. My temperature rose to 73 degrees at the end of the test. What is the highest temperature that is still considered safe?
~~~~~~~~~~
3859 3DMarks, 513/283.5, slight artifacting in nature, 68 degrees at the end.
I dunno if there are any artifacting I don't think its completely safe. I haven't done any mobile meter readings yet, but even when benchmarking oc'ed it didn't seem to get any hotter than when benchmarked at stock clocks.
Where do you change the settings to OC a notebook? BIOS? I didn't see any place there to make changes for OCing. I have been playing with my 4750 and I'm happy (at the moment) with it's stock settings. This is my first notebook and I'm glad I got a Sager w/AMD64 CPU.
you have to dl an OC'ing program. most people use powerstrip. glad you enjoy your lappy ... *sigh* it'll be more than a week before I get mine
Thanks... Believe me it will be worth the wait... especially if you are getting the V model as you are stating on your threads. I'm already looking at upgradeing to that one.
Now thats strange..when I had the 5690 I could run far cry on high settings with a 472/299 stock i think it was... 73 is high.. do a search on the boards to find out more about temps..I think the general rule is to keep uping the clock and running 3dmark til you get artifacting.. then drop it down to the last stable clock... i'd run 3dmark a few more times at that setting to make sure its not going to artifact with the raise in temp.. if it doesn't that would be considered a stable clock for you..
I checked AMD's website and whitepaper and it stated that 70c was the Max case temp. for a AMD64 chip. Now, this I find strange... I've had mine as high as 75c for a couple of seconds during benching and it did not bother the CPU a bit. Well... I will not push my luck either.
I have pictures, i just need someone to host them.any takers pm me. the faster i get a response that faster you guys get pics of the laptop. its really well built too. you can push the lcd back further than 90 more like 130-150 back! No pictures of that yet though. I took a ton of pictures but only a handful came out, so i will release that handful once i get a dedicated server.
Try artic silver.. when you have internal temps its not just the cpu you have to worry about..there's also your gpu..Now its usually stable when you stop artifacting..but the design of the chasis will prevent you from using amd's true power to max... might try a laptop cooler too but really think about the artic silver 5 i've heard some had temp drops of nearly 10 degrees and thats far safer and where you want to be..
