IRQ issues

Is there any way I can trick my 5660 and XP pro into not stacking half my devices on IRQ 11?The main issue is the AC97 audio is causing major stutters in games when sharing IRQ with the Radeon 9000. (especially BF1942) I know this for sure because if I disable the sound card in the device manager I can go back to gaming smooth as silk....with no sound! My modem, usb, Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM SMBus Controller and IE1334 are also on IRQ 11 but don't appear to be contributing to the issues.
I also get as a result, cpu noise coming through my audio if I am plugged into a grounded stereo amplifier.

If I do a reinstall,is there any particular order I can intall devices that will prevent the Radeon and the AC97 from sharing an IRQ?

Does anyone else have their Radeon and AC97 on seperate IRQ's?Is it possible?Has anyone else found disabling AC97 to increase their video performance?

If there isn't a xp fix,how does installing/running standard pc work?Is it a pain to get everything setup? Is it reliable? Can I still manually put the computer to sleep or are all power saving features disabled?
Will the display turn off when I close the lid?etc etc.

Lot's of questions.......

Radeon 9000 on PCI 16, and AC'97 on PCI 17.

Strange thing is, I thought it only went to 15. Then again, I'm on the 8887, but maybe this will help you.

Sounds like the 8887 uses APIC.IS there a way to enable APIC on the 5660?

Maybe I should post this in general Sager discussion?
I can't be the only one to have my audio and video conflicting while sharing an IRQ?

Seeing as I am apparently the only one who has ever had this problem, perhaps I should reinstall windows and hope it fixes itself with a fresh setup?

I'm using Win2K and I have AUDIO VIDEO and PCMCIA on the same IRQ.

Sager 5670.

Ok here is a list of stuff thats using the same IRQ on my 5660 :-
===========================================

Realtek AC'97 Audio (Sound Card)
Radeon 9000 Series (Display Card ATi Radeon 9000)
Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 Firewire (Firewire Card)
Smart Link 56K Fax Modem
Intel(R) 82801 CA/CAM SMBus Controller-2483
VIA Revision 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller

That sounds like a lot of stuff using the same Queue...!?!?

Im sure this is not a good thing - any way we can manually set the IRQ's ??

I mean? Imagine - I just Disabled the sound card and WALLAH!! No problems with BF1942!! Just like Alien mentioned earlier...

Is this really a big deal? If it is then I want a workaround...How can they call this XP-Pro is they wont allow us to set IRQ's by ourselves??

I dont think having the Modem, USB Controller, Firewire, GPU and Sound Card on the same IRQ is good for performance...

Anyone with ideas??

Can anyone else confirm this as an issue or even better yet,not an issue on their 5660/5670? Is there a workaround?

Can I install my drivers in a particular order so that the video and sound don't share an irq?

Am I going to have to do a STANDARD PC install and lose all my power saving features?

Am I going to have to have a PCMCIA or usb soundcard hanging out the side of my 5660?

C'mon,I know there's lots of smart people hanging out here

I can confirm this 100% beyond doubt...

HAVING THE SOUND CARD AND RADEON 9000 ON THE SAME IRQ IS AFFECTING PERFORMANCE

to the level that the games are becoming unplayable...

Can anyone come up with a solution??

I am gonna ask Troy about this problem and for ideas...THIS SUCKS!!

I'll be re-doin OS in a couple of days so i'll just not install the sound card drivers and see what happens...

Its a bummer that there are so many other devices waiting in the same IRQ as the Graphics card...this is shitty because IMO a GPU should have a dedicated IRQ no matter what...

Can we change this by changing the order in which we install the drivers??

This is turning out to be a major bummer...BF1942 with sound will crap up on the dot, 20 minutes into the game and become unplayable...BF1942 without sound goes on and on ...

Same with F1 - remember I complained about graininess?? Thats not there anymore when the sound is gone...Also - each time the pit boss made a comment in F1 - the game would stall - I should have noticed this immediately but I didnt think about IRQ's simply because I had no idea...

ANyone with solutions??

Can anyone tell me is Windows 2000 allows you to set IRQ's manually?? I mean...this is turning out to be BS - is it a problem with OS or is it hardware?? Why are they sharing the same IRQ by default??

I am SOO bummed...cant play games decently now...never used to happen before...

Any idea how to switch from ACPI to Standard PC installation of OS ?? I mean - I have no idea so a walkthrough will be awesome...

First attempt - pathetic attempt

Ok I tried to go Standard PC without re-installation of OS if possible...

Device Manager -> Computer -> ACPI...blah blah -> Update Driver -> Select Standard PC -> You will have to restart...

After restarting everything looked like the first reboot after windows installation...it started recognizing all kinds of hardware and asked me for drivers for specific ones...

I just installed the video drivers and went ahead to check if I could change IRQ settings manually - In the Standard PC section of the driver manager I turned off Automatic IRQ steering and then tried again - NO USE!!

There seems to be no way you can do the IRQ crap on your own...If I cant find a way out of this im going back to Windows 98. I mean...this is total BS!!

well i haven't played much with irq since plug n play arrived on nt... but i think you can set bios to non-plugnplay and assign irqs manually there. probly best to uninstall all devices you want to shift before you do it. you may not have to reinstall, or perhaps "upgrade-in-place" will handle everything if you have trouble after the switch.

Oh so I have to twiddle with the Bios ? hmmmm...

Lemme see...Im waiting for An Alien to come up with his report - he's trying the standard PC thingy too...if he can somehow allocate the GPU and soundcard to dedicated IRQ's then I will follow his instructions...

You will not believe the improved performance after disabling the sound card - everything is smoother and faster!! even the mouse !! (USB is on the same IRQ) - the sound card was really screwing things up...

Actually I'm waiting untill someone with more knowledge of these things chimes in with some info.I'm not that keen on reinstalling windows more times than I really need to,and in all other regards I have my 5660 set up exactly how I like it and purring like a kitten. If there is any chance,I would like to keep my power management features too.Maybe it's just time to buy a PCMCIA soundcard...
Maybe someone can help out with the completely undocumented bios settings in the "ACPI Table/Features control Sub-Menu"?
This is the only section of the 5660's sadly meager bios interface that the manual doesn't bother explaining in the slightest.

(unrelated:
I sure wish there was a way to access all the bios' features. It would be nice to be able to tweak settings.Perhaps it's time I learned to hack bios files...)

This is BS man...Everything runs smoother without the sound card enabled..the mouse scrools faster and smoother and the games run better...

I am really pissed...I cannot find a solution!?!?

WIll moving to Windows 98 fix this problem?? Can someone help?? Adam, Troy, someone who can test this out and come up with a solution??

This is ruining my game play...and its never happened before...only after I installed the NEW drivers...

I think im heading back to :-

a] My CD drivers
b] Windows 98

unless this is resolved...
So you think the updated drivers flashed something in the sound chip? Odd, but possible I suppose...

haven't used 9x since 95 but i think it manges irq the same way.

Hey guys, Im currently not on my laptop. But Im on a dell with win2000. Anyways If you goto Device Manager and then on the top goto View and select Resources by Type. Then hit the Plus sign on IRQ. It will show all your devices using IRQ. Now ive noticed (atleast with this dell that im on) that when you goto a device>properties>resource tab that on some of the devices the check box that states "use automatic settings" is checked as well as greyed out or under other devices in the IRQ's its not greyed out and you are able to change the settings for it if you uncheck the box. Sadly on this dell the box is greyed out for the soundcard aswell as the graphics card.. (even though there not sharing irq's). So im guessing our laptops are greyed out in this also. Well im gonna go ahead and try some things out and il get back to you all ~_^.

When i get home i will try these out on the laptop. For now off what i think might work would be to go into the bios and disable plug n play (that way we can manually set our irq's). Or there should be an option in the bios to set up IRQ assignments. I noticed when looking in the device manager and seeing the IRQ settings, the Audio/Nic/USB are using irq port 9 (this was with ACPI installed in windows), and in the bios it sais that the Audio/Nic/USB are irq 10 and the Video is 9. So i went ahead and switched to Standard PC mode where it did the exact same thing as someone mentioned earlier (which it reinstalls the drivers for everything again) the only difference is that now in the device manager it is complying with what was set up in the bios where before the bios had it as one setting and windows just went ahead and put them on a diff IRQ. So now in the device manager it sais my audio/nic/usb are irq 10 now. So with what i have here im guessing is all we have to do is

A) Goto the bios and set the IRQ for the video card different from the audio. (Assuming the laptops bios has an option to configure the irq's for our audio/video/usb.)

B) Boot into the OS and goto Device Manager>Computer>acpi(forgot what else it says)>Properties>Driver>Update Driver>Manually Select "Standard PC".

C) Reboot machine let it reinstall all the drivers on its own. Then it will most likely ask you to supply the drivers for the video card and sound card and you just install it, then it will ask you to reboot.

NOTE: In the following step (D) I dont think you really have to do step D from what i just checked. Either you check it or you uncheck it i have noticed that the IRQ for my devices still change to what i put into the BIOS. (Yes i tried both ways already). So if there is anyone out there who knows more than me if you can please state if there are any benifits or drawbacks to having this checked or not. Please share *_*. So if you dont want to do D just skip to E.

D) Go back to device manager>Computer>Standard PC>IRQ Steering> and uncheck the "Use IRQ Steering option". Reboot.

E) After reboot go back to device manager and check to see if your audio and video have the IRQ that you assigned in the BIOS.

Now if it doesnt work and it still sharing irq's then time to look into another solution even though i think this one will surely work. Well Im in school right now so i cant try it out till i get home which im surely going to try it. If anyone else tries this please give us some feedback.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I 99.9% Sure this will work!. 00.1% that it wont! I just finished restarting the computer and going into the bios and setting the NIC card to IRQ 11 from 10. I just finished loading back up and checked device manager and it changed to 11 as well from 10!. SO YES THIS IS THE WAY TO DO IT !. I cant wait togo home. I hope someone tries it in the next 2 hours. I still have 2 more hours for school to end!! woot!
