Stuttering startup sound in WinXP ...

Thread Starter
Why does the sound stutter when WinXP starts up ... it only happens after a fresh restart! Argh!!! Does anyone have this issue on the I8600?

I just find it annoying as hell when that happens! Since I installed all the drivers and updates properly.

Could someone please shed some light in this matter? Please feel free to let me know if you require further information in diagnosing this issue.

I am running WinXP Pro with SP1 + WinXP Plus!

Thanks in advance for any helpful pointers.
I believe this could be a driver issue ... since the sound card is okay when playing music and watching movies.

Argh! Why did Dell remove the S/PDIF out in the 8600 C edition?
I so wanted to plug the digital audio into my Z-680 while watching DVDs.

It's perfectly normal to hear stuttered sounds while WinXP Pro starts its various services or some applications (e.g., a virus scanner). I hear that occasionally, and maybe WinXP Plus contributes to the issue in your case. Your audio output is not done independently in hardware alone, and it may be distorted when Windows loads programs.

If this is your main issue, consider yourself lucky!

Yeah, as KCK mentioned it is no biggie. It happens to most comps as a result of start-up applications and so on. Sure it is annoying but there is not that much you can do short of disabling all start-up programs. Don't worry about it.

You could reinstall Windows... you probably have a gazillion programs running at Startup, most of which you probably don't need.

I have this issue on mine too, and agree that is is likely a start up app. I have also reinstalled XP Pro and do not seem to recall it on my first couple of starts when the lappy was fresh out of the box. Maybe there is a piece of Dell software I didn't install.

Fixed?!

In doing my post-full install house cleaning, I found that additional Sigmatel drivers were being loaded at startup. Not sure what they are needed for, but the start up sound issue is gone.

Using REGEDIT, navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

And delete the item that reads:
"SigmaTel StacMon"="C:\\Program Files\\SigmaTel\\SigmaTel AC97 Audio Drivers\\stacmon.exe"

(Note: if this doesn't mean anything to you, don't attempt ANYTHING with RegEdit)

I don't have that in my folder... I'm thinking it has to do with either Avast! or Sygate during the startup process.
