how hard is it to replace usb ports???

I purchased a usb hub to support all of my devices, but when I plugged them all in, it said it couldn't supply enough power. So I went and bought a power supply to plug into the usb hub. Well, i guess the power supply was the wrong polarity, and it fried my ports because now they don't work? How hard is it to replace them???

Thanks, Mike

Easy; just buy a new hub. Seriously, a repair would most probably cost much more than a new hub.

not only would it be cheaper, but in order to replace the ports you'd have to desolder the old ports, find someplace that sells new replacement ports, and then figure out how they have to be reconnected and resolder them, it will save you a lot of time to just spend the $20 and buy a new hub

Well, you can buy the usb port piece itself, and if you're good at desoldering there are 6 pins you have to desolder then resolder. But most likely you burned out the usb controller, which will be very hard to find online. Like the people said above, the usb hub is the cheapest fix for you (unless none of your ports are working). If your warranty is up, can't use other ports, and don't want to desolder, you can also use a pcmcia usb port card.

This is when you DONT want to put your led switch there

both usb ports arn't recognizing any usb devices....so how would buying a new hub help? Sorry, i'm a little confused on that. The only thing that makes sense right now is to buy a pcmcia usb hub. I didn't even think about doing that. I can get a 4 port usb 2.0 pcmcia for like 20 bucks online. I think i'll end up doing that. Unless you guys have any other solutions. Thanks.

if the ports on the computer itself are shot, a pcmcia usb card is going to be your only course of action...short of purchasing a new laptop at least

Oh that reminds me I didn't post what my new switch looks like. I dremeled the pcmcia cover and stuck the switch on the cover.

We didn't know initially that you were talking about your computer ports. In this case, you would probably need to exchange the motherboard, so going with the PC Card option is much cheaper.

You never mentioned that it was the ports on the Laptop that were broken and you havn't said what the laptop was. From your description, it shouldn't of fried the USB ports on the computer.

well....currently, my usb ports on my 8600 arn't recognizing anything.....but according to windows they are fine. Windows recognizes the usb ports and says they are fine...but when i plug something into the ports, the device is not recognized. Is there a way of refreshing the ports or something along that line. Maybe they just shut down from a power surge..i dont know. I don't know how plugging a power supply into a usb hub could have fried the ports on my laptop.

Drivers... chipset drivers on the Inspiron Tools and System Software (or something like that)

Uninstall the ports from device manager. Actually, uninstall all the USB hardware. You'll find it under Universal Serial Bus Controllers at the bottom
