CL56 problem

ok, another problem, I keep getting bsod's (flash too quickly to read), and the computer crashes, when I start it back up it says it had a driver error, I installed winxp (it was downloaded (yes it's a legal copy), so it's possible that it could be a bad burn?) and i installed all the drivers that came on the cd (first thing i did was install windows then run the one-touch driver install), anyone else have this problem, it's not really when I do anything in particular, it's kind of random it seems, i think it's happened before when i tried loading files into winamp across a network, it's happened when i tried getting wifi to work, it's even happened overnight while i was sleeping and i woke up to a rebooted computer that said it suffered a serious driver error

any ideas? thanks

How can it be a legal copy that you have downloaded?
With concent you can make a backup copy of you legal copy of Windows and USE your legal serial/product key.....

actually, my university provides it to students for free download via their website, including legit key and all, if you want to get extremely technical about it, then yes, i pay for it built into tuition, but i don't consider that buying a copy of windows

I heard from somewhere that Microsoft actually have a place online for their employee to download it, thus it's legal..

If this be the case you would think MS would offer the disc to their staff, still this is MS we're talkin about.

uhh you know NOTHING about what your'e tlaking about.

MIcrosoft Academic Partner proram gives schoools ultd. keys to students in comp sci or other departments eligible free copies of virtually every program. and you downloaded it off the uni server or you can use one of the 10 cds (any uni bigger htan 1000 coudn't survive on 10 cds) :P

ok, so what did you do about it? i've tried reinstalling windows several times, i'm currently trying to get win2k up and running, but i ran into a few problems while installing...first while formatting the drive it said it was damaged, so i tried again, and it said it again, i restarted and tried one more time and it went through and installed, but while copying the files it came across 3 files it couldn't copy, so i skipped them hoping for the best, i now have it up into windows and am installing drivers, hopefully all goes well but i have a strong feeling that it won't... hopefully the hdd isn't DOA...please anyone let me know if they have any ideas....thanks.

My Computer-->Properties-->Advanced-->startup and recovery--Automaticaly restart-->change that so you can read the BSOD and then reference it with Google.com

I was getting random BSOD's soon after a fresh install, i then reinstalled and they've gone away, so that's always an option to try, and it's the easiest.

hmm that HD should be DOA. i reformated and reinstalled
i had to create a new partition tho

Exact same thing at my school (Though it's not a university, it's a CEGEP, we have a different system here, 5 years high school 2-3 years CEGEP then 3 years university)

As a ComputerScience student in CEGEP I get free copies of all sorts of stuff, including WinXP. Though, since my school's net connection is horrible (3mbit fiber, uselessly slow), they just give us burned CDs and tell us to burn a copy, along with our official Microsoft CD key sticker.

It's funny i was gonna post and ask about this... I have a CL56 and the same problem. A program will crash and then I get the BSOD that flashes quickly and then my computer shuts down... or it locks up and starts peeping loudly... I think it's my drivers; I only have the ones that came on the CD. Can anyone help me out with where I can get the latest drivers? Thank you.

Funny you should mention, I have the exact same problem! Mostly happens when I'm gaming, but on the desktop it happens too. Bluescreen flashes, reboots, driver problem reported on reboot. Tommorow I will try to solve it the following ways:

1) Flash new BIOS
2) Update drivers with ones from Compal FTP (CD is old maybe?)
3) Try switching from Omega drivers to regular Catalyst drivers with INF mod.

Hopefully one of that helps.

Let us know how it goes.

that sounds exactly like my problem, i'm almost positive that it's driver problems, but i got fed up with it and put win2k on and haven't had any problems yet, i had both omega and ati drivers and neither worked any better if that helps eliminate anything
post #18 of 32
any ati driver's past 4.5 are not reccomended for mobility users. thats why compal, and every other notebook manufacturer, has not released catalyst drivers past this. i had massive problems with omega 4.6 and 4.7. i tried running 4.5 and they worked great, but i actually get better performance in my games with the 4.5 drivers from compal and i dont need the overclocking features, so thats what im running now. fewer opengl problems, no video playback problems.

Newbie question: what's the third light on the CL56? 1st is power 2nd is battery 3rd is?? It sometimes pops up as an error before I get the BSOD, and it's red/orange. Thanks.
