Inspiron 8600 (128mb vram) or Acer Aspire AS2012WLMi?

Thread Starter
I just ordered an Insipiron 8600 from DellOutlet, but I am thinking of rejecting the package at the door to get a refund, then getting the Acer because of the price drop. My main concern is the video memory of the Acer, but the DVD+/-RW is tempting. I will have an external hard drive, so hd space is not much of a concern. What laptop do you think i should get? Thanks.

the Dell i ordered:
Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook: Mobile Pentium M Processor, 1.5GHz, 15.4 WXGA Display, Internal NIC/Modem/Sound
Microsoft Windows XP Home
256 MB DDR SDRAM, 333MHz (1 DIMM) (I will add 256mb for about $45)
External 1.44MB USB Floppy Disk Drive
30 GB EIDE Hard Drive (4200 RPM)
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
15.4 inch WXGA Notebook Screen
Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 mini PCI Card
24X CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
$1,104.00 total + $45 (memory)

the Acer:
Acer Aspire AS2012WLMi
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1.5GHz
Display: 15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800)
OS: Windows XP Pro
Memory: 512MB DDR333 SDRAM (256MB x 2)
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, 64MB DDR
HD: 60GB
Optical Drive: DVD+/-RW
Communication: 56K Modem, 10/100 LAN, 802.11b/g WLAN
Ports: 3x USB2.0, 1x IEEE1394, VGA, Parallel, Audio Ports, FIR, S-video TV out, 4-in-1 card reader
Average Battery Life: 5 hours
Weight: 6.6 lbs
$1,289.00 + $4 shipping

If you really need a DVD-RW drive just buy it
The performance of the 8600 is much better (because of the 128mb and the pro turbo MR9600 is agressively clocked so definately faster as the MR9700 64mb).
If you've had ordered the DVD-RW drive with the 8600 it would come at the same price as the Acer.

I had to make the same choice as you and I chose the Dell

I had a similar choice to make and I chose the Asus because:
-Bigger Hdd. If you think youre not going to have to replace the 30gb in the 8600, you'de be fooling yourself.
-Lighter weight. Some people care about this; some don't. I do.
-I'm not so sure if Nullius is right about the 128mb 9600 being much better than the 64mb 9700. Ususally, the generation change makes a big difference.
-Whether or not you need it, you're getting the dvd drive which is useful.
-Youre getting a new unit; not a refurb. I dont know if this really makes a difference, but it could.

The Asus is certainly a better value, but if you dont need its extras, then even for cheap they'de be overpriced.
