Data Transfer

What is the best way to move all the data I have on my current desktop to my new 8887? I would rather not have to write everything to CD's and transfer it over.

I have heard that infared is good for this but I don't have that and I don't know how much it costs.

Thanks

Infrared is HORRIBLY slow... 4Mbps at best. USB 1.1 is even faster. The fastest way is via FIREWIRE network (400Mbps) but if you do the CD thing, you'll have the data archived incase something needs doing on the laptop (like a re-install/re-format).

There's also a crossover cable to go network card to network card. I use external Firewire hard drives to keep things on, personally. That's one thing to consider: an external HD for backup, and it's a nice transfer method. Get either Firewire or USB2.0.

This question will best be answered if we know the possibilities of the desktop system (i.e. does it have firewire, network, etc)?

Thanks for the help.

The desktop has a network card but no firewire port and only USB 1.1.

The crossover cable sounds like the best option. Where can I get one and how easy is it to set up and use?

Just ask around your local computer shop for a crossover ethernet cable, and when you get it, just connect both pc's directly on their network hubs, then, if both have xp, it's very easy (actually i use crossovers to backup, it doesnt take me more than 5 minutes to start backing up)
I just need info on the OS's you use.
