What is the best Dell Notebook for ....

I would like to get a Dell notebook in the 5-6 lb range to be used mostly for e-mail and internet surfing. I will do some light travel, but not much. What are your suggestions and what sort of configuration is necessary. I would like to keep the cost around $1,400.

Have a look at the Inspiron 600m. It is about 5.3lbs, with a nice powerful Pentium -M (up to 755 (2.0GHz)), the Mobility 9000 and a good battery life. I would say that it suits your needs quite well.

Go to the Dell website and configure it to your liking, you should easily be able to keep it under US$1400. For your uses I would suggest you could get by with the XGA display, Intel 705, 32MB M9 (choose 64MB if you do game a little bit) and 512MB of RAM.

thanks stu, that machine is for my wife. However, I want to replace my C400 with something as light as possible. do you know if the X300 is going to be updated or replaced anytime soon ??

The 700m is the thinnest and lightest Inspiron you can buy from Dell... the X300 is even smaller, but I'm not sure whether it'll be replaced soon.

Well it's not the thinnest, but it's the smallest/lightest Inspiron.
