why does WEP not like me?

Thread Starter
upon following the step-by-step instructions in this month's MaximumPC for securing a wireless connection, step 2 is seemingly insurmountable. they say to enable WEP encryption, so i'm like "cool, why not?" well i go into the router web setup and i set it and i lose the full monty connection. after about 5 hours of pulling teeth and ingrown cuticles, resetting and power cycling the router 94584 times, i decide to power cycle the cable modem and i have connection again. i go back into my settings not knowing the wep was the bastard the killed me in the first place and enable the router settings one by one...

i then go into the windows wep control and it also kills the connection...are wep and me not meant to be? am i really the complete and utter moron that i think i am? should i flush all hopes of ever becoming a CCNA becasue i can't even figure out my own fuggin small arse network? please give me a thread of hope from which to weave my shreaded abilities.....

Once you enable WEP on the router, you must write down the KEY for the clients to use.

There are typically 4 different ones to pick (most go with the 1st key) and some (Linksys cards/routers) have a passphrase-thing that will work instead.

So basically, with WEP enabled, and you on the Router's web-based config screen, copy the KEY #1 hex key...

On the windows laptop/computer with the wireless card, go into "View Available Wireless Networks" and under the ADVANCED button, highlight the SSID in the bottom window and select PROPERTIES...

Then, where it says "Data Encryption" make sure it's set to WEP, and then type the KEY (that you wrote down, if smart, you'd do it in a .txt file and copy/paste) in both boxes (it asks for a confirmation).

Then make sure the Key Index (advanced) thing is on 1 (remember, we copied Key#1)...

then click OK/OK.. and see if it now connects.

Oh, don't forget to cross your fingers (and yourself, if you're religious)...

First, MaximumPC rules - best PC Mag out there and that article is very well written.

Second, I feel your pain and had the exact same problem. BUT, mine was from stupidity. What I would do, with the step about enabling the Key, is to create an original one. Enter the combination of 2 numbers through the Key. IE 10 35 65 87 34 1A B6 or whatever you want. But make sure when you transfer that key over to the client pc, that you select the right hexidecimal method to enter the key in with, or you will run into problems. In other words, make sure the format of the Keys are the same on both the router and the client.
