OK well here are my two choices in the flesh:

CL56 from MWave:

1.7Ghz Dothan
40Gb 5400rpm
DVD/CD-RW
Intel 2200
+ 512Mb Kingmax CAS2 from Newegg

=> $1427 + $34 3-day UPS

FOR: build quality, slightly better specs

AGAINST: plain-looking, possibility of dodgy parts, optical drive in the front (that will be a pain)

vs

Aopen 1557GL from MyAopen:

1.6Ghz Dothan
40Gb 5400rpm
DVD/CD-RW
+ 512Mb Kingmax CAS2 from Newegg
+ options: $15 testing & install; $25 Targus bag; Orinoco instead of 2200 - no price difference

=> $1420 including options; +$35 3-day UPS

FOR: better looks, comes with a bag (which is arguably more useful than 100MHz), can save another $40 if I need to.

AGAINST: not as sturdy, smaller user-base, optical drive also in the front

The main problem I've got is that the CL56 seems to make more sense but doens't quite close the deal.. and that the logical side of me says I'm only looking at the Aopen because of the looks.. and those two arguments don't let me decide on either.

My CL 56 from Mwave came with a bag as well (its not targus though).
I got mine with a toshiba hdd and i put corsair memory into mine. and looks of the cl 56 are much better in person.

Odd I have an AOpen 1557GL configured as follows

1.7GHz Dothan
40Gb 5400rpm
DVD/CD-RW
512MB DDR 333
Intel 2200

no bag (quite frankly I can find better cheaper. And I already have one)

All for 1409. Much better setup and its on par with the CL56

BTW ive never seen those specs for 1400 on a CL56 :/
*edit*
Wow the cl56 just came back into the picture. I wish a store near me had them both so i could see them in person.

Yeah I'm going with the AOpen 1557GL, mainly for specs and professional looks. Didn't really like the CL-56 because of it's plain ugly looks. If I'm gonna spend over 1500 on something, it better look good, without the $400 paintjob.
Also I'm not sure how you got $1420 with the specs you put out a13antichrist. HardTech seems to have done his homework.
About $1400 for AOpen 1557GL
Pentium M 1.7ghz 735
40gb 5400rpm
DVD/CD-RW
512mb Kingmax RAM
Intel Pro 2200 (check out my post for this, $28.20 w/ free ship at buy.com)
+ options: $15 testing & install; $25 Targus bag

Check out my sig, got something similar to this with 60gb 7200rpm, 2x 512mb, and DVD+RW for $1600.

I configured the 1557 with all the parts except the RAM bought straight from MyAopen - no point paying $15 for an install & testing if they don't have any parts to install & test.. where are you configuring the setup at 1409?

There's a shop here that has a Gigabyte version of the CL-56, no-one with the Aopen to compare though...

That's why your getting a higher price a13antichrist. You can buy all of the parts that MyAOpen.com offers for cheaper from other sites.
Like the Hard Drive, check out ZipZoomFly.com
Intel Pro 2200BG, check out Buy.com
Processor and RAM, check out Newegg.com
The rest you can get from MyAOpen.com

this thread was pretty useful for price comparisons. i was kinda leaning towards aopen, but now im definately going for it. now all i need is the $$...

The problem I have with getting the parts separately is that it means no thorough checking before it goes to my friend - and he can't put them together - before he ships it off over the ocean to New Zealand. Memory he can probably handle but anything else is asking too much - and if it's DOA it's a long way back again.. :/

Tempting though..

By the way, if people could justify their votes on the poll we could make this plus the Mitac/Asus poll stickies at the top for easy comparisons of user opinions on the forum...

Stickies just don't happen here unfortunately.

I went with the 1557GLS...liked the looks and ability to put whatever parts I wanted into it. Never really looked serious at the CL56 because it is kinda dull and boring looking. Nothing exciting jumped out at me!

Barebones 1557 w/shipping @MyAopen: $817
Built-in DVD/CD-RW: 88
735 from Newegg: 295
60Gb 5400 Hitachi from Newegg: $130
512Mb Kingmax Cas2 from Newegg: 92
Intel 2200 from BestBuy: 28.2
Total: $1440, with no testing or bag

CL56 from Alphapcstore, free shipping: $829
DVD/CD-RW: good question.. which ones fit?
otherwise same parts as above
+$40 for HDD frame? What's that about?
Only way to get close to the Aopen is from Mwave, added 512Mb Kingmax gives $1427 but then add ~$30 for shipping..

I should probably stop bothering to look though since that 3790 is almost here...

is the screen noticably better on the aopen.. the biggest bitch i have about my laptops now is the screen.. i want a freaking screen with good verticle viewing angle.. and apparently the cl56 fails in that department.

I would sacrifice a gaming vid card for a good screen.. for video work. The emachine screen was good.. just the res was too low.

The screen on the CL56 is probably the worst of the lot. The Aopen is apparently a little better, not anywhere the best, but still better than the CL56.
Apparently.

what about the comprable asus machine.. what 3rd party machiens actually HAVE a good screen.. someone who isn't say sony.

IBM's screens are pretty good but not the best.. perfectly acceptable to me.

From memory the screens on the M6Ns are supposed to be pretty great. Look for another thread like this one comparing the Mitac 8050 & Asus M6N.
