hi i reformatted my 8600 with win xp. then installed the drivers, installed norton security.

when i do a windows update, the downloading runs fine. but when it came to installation, it seems really slow, took more than an hour in total, and when the installation bar becomes complete, it just stays there and nothing happens. help, it keep happening after trying to update windows especially after reformatting.

thanks in advance

Really don't know what to tell you there. When it does the install it does take a few minutes to get finished. Never had it hung up for an hour though.

As bad is this may sound...

It is recommended to disable the firewall and anti-virus prior to installing new software or applying updates.

Most of the install literature (that no one reads) will say that.

It is possible that the firewall and anti-virus could trap conditions during the install/update that are considered a threat and in the process of neutralizing the threat, corrupt the install.

True but a lot of that is just CYA (Cover Your Ass), so people can't sue them.

I can vouch for this based on personal experince with multiple PCs and Symantec products. Norton AV and Security do intefere with Windows Update and I have not found a quick way around this. Disabling it from the sys tray first before updating won't take long.
