I'm looking for an ultra portable notebook, that I can work primarily on ms office applications and play dvd's. Please tell me what you think about the Sony Vaio VGN-S150. Other notebooks I've looked at are: IBM X31 and Apple 12" Powerbook.

Thanks,
Teo

The biggest drawback to Sony Vaios are their pathetic video cards.

I got a top of the line deal some years ago and learned the hard way.

Make sure you get video performance you'll want now and at least the next 12 months?!?!

Fortunately higher models in the S series has Mobility Radeon 9700 with 64mb vram.

However, the extent of my video use is for dvd playing. So would the Sony Vaio VGN-S150 be a better option than the other two models mentioned?

The S150 is more than capable of playing DVDs, it should be fine for you. The 12" Powerbook would also suit you fine, if you wanted to go the Apple route.

A long discussion on the Sony S series is here:

Vaio Type S

Also here are a couple of S series forums:

The X31 is nice, but it doesn't have a built-in optical drive. You'd have to get the media-base attachment which adds size and weight, making it less of an ultraportable.

The S series has gone a long way towards correcting that problem. In fact, there's nothing in the S170's size/weight class that can match it's video performance.

I actually jumped ship from the 12" PowerBook to the S150 about three days ago and am absolutely loving it...the Sony screen blows Apple's away, as does performance (in feel). Battery life on the Sony also beats the PB by an hour to an hour and a half with standard battery (DVD playback is nearly an hour longer on the Sony).

If you go for the S150, you won't be sorry. It is the best laptop I have used to date (This year, I purchased three notebooks...the HP zt3010us, the PowerBook, and the S150, and while I loved the zt3010us, liked the PB, I absolutely love beyond all else the S150).

I'm pretty much decided to get the Sony S150 vs a Dell 700m. Does it make much difference with regards to service agreements and warranties if i buy direct from SONY or go to BestBuy. The only reason why I am leaning towards BesyBuy is because it for my sin in college ad there is a BestBuy very close but if any service is needed. Thanks for your input.

Sony = overpriced/underperformance/horrible customer service/bad shipping times

Sony makes good products, otherwise they wouldnt be as huge as they are, but in any case, dont by directly from them unless you have your heart set on customizing it to your exact specifications. If the S150 is enough for your needs, as it probably will be, than buy from CompUSA or some retail store. From my experience CompUSA is the most knowledgeable about computers since their stores dont sell everything. they sell mostly just computers. Best Buy can sell you everysingle electronic piece of equipment known to man, and for them computer sales are a small percentage of there overall sales.
