PCI-Express & MR9800 might take longer then expected.

Well, I RMA'd my 5690 about 2 weeks ago. Just got word that Tom at PCT got my credit, and wanted to know what I wanted to do with it. Originally, I was going to reinvest it into the 8790, so I told Tom, when he got word from Sager on my credit, to hold it as credit, and not to send a check. With all this talk of PCI-express, and upgrades on GPU's to the 9800, I had to ask Tom what the estimated time of release would be... Well, here are e-mails me and tom exchanged...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Tom,
I was wondering. I really love Sager, and am staying loyal to it regardless of your answer, but. When do u think PCI-E or ATI mr9800 will be out in Clevo models?
Or, is the 8790/4750 going to be getting GPU upgrades?
I would really like to wait for Sager to come out with either the 9800, or PCI-E before I reinvest my money into them. In the forums, there was talk about the 8790 being upgraded. Many people say its not going to happen b/c the motherboard and GPU would need to be replaced, which is obviously going to be an EXTREMELY costly upgrade.
Well, if you could please get back to me with ANY information on this topic, it would be a great help to me. As of now, hold on to my credit. But if Sager isn't going to have any upgrades for a wile, I will need a check (even though ill be spending it at PCT. I would just rather have the money in my hands then to have a credit for moths on end. no offense to PCT.. ) Well, im anticipation your prompt response!!
Billy"
Billy,
My best information places an interval of at least a couple of months before a notebook incorporating PCI-Express or MR9800 becomes available from Sager. As for possible GPU/Mobo upgrades for current models, it's really not clear what will happen. If you're set on the aforementioned features before you can buy a new notebook, I would suggest that you opt for the check for now
So there you have it, from the mouth of someone who actually knows WTF is going on ... doesn't sound good... And the fact that he said "If you're set on the aforementioned features before you can buy a new notebook, I would suggest that you opt for the check for now " REALLY worries me... I never said in my mail I wouldn't wait for them to come out with one. But with a comment like that, I think it will be longer than we all anticipated. I really hope im misinterpreting his words, bigtime!
Still doesn't merit buying a Dell!
Ok so what is so wrong with Dell? The Dell people seem to be happy with them....I know Billy feels why pay more for something that is now outdated..and outdated in laptops is a far bigger deal then in a desktop...Sager is always my first choice too..if they have something coming in Sept/Oct I have no problems waiting.. As cutting edge and up to date as Clevo has been, I find it hard to believe it will be spring before they catch up to dell...Eurocom says Sept...many feel this is more likely October...we already know the model is their, it just hasn't been released yet..so I think Spring is to far out.... But back to my question..whats wrong with Dell? Is it bad build quality..is it lousey tech support? Why is everyone hating Dell..right now they offer the best bang for the buck and their system is blowing everyones system out of the water..and for a lower price...I've never owned..so im asking those who do know..
IMHO, I think that Sager will release a 9790? type of model in mid/late November or early December. This will be based on the Clevos D990 model and be similiar (not exactly the same as the Eurocom unit). This is - IF all the things that they are currently having problems with are ironed out. As far as Dell goes, well it is a Dell and may or may not fit your needs - just remember that the Higher CPU and Memory options will "Cost You Dearly" - that's the way of Dell. I have a Dell Desktop and it has worked well for the last two years.
I don't think it will be late Nov/Dec. They already have the units in testing and more than one website has thier release in a couple of months. Even Tom from PC Torque said a couple of months. To me, a couple is 2. That would make thier release in late Sept/early Oct. I quess we will have to wait and see.
Initial Eurocom delivery + 60 Days = Earliest Sager Release Date and Approximate shipping date for Eurocom (Not early order date). Looking into the past to predict the future here.
I have had a couple of Dell desktops and my wife has had a Dell laptop and we have never had any problems. The anti-dell sentiment is understandable though because they tend to represent the monopoly in the laptop/desktop market and noone wants to be part of the mainstream in this day and age. A similar case is the anti-intel/pentium sentiment where opting for AMD was the the thing to do regardless of technical differences. Consumerism, at the peoples level, relies on trends to survive and this is no different in the computer world. Personally I dont follow public opinion that is not backed up by technical arguments. Choose the machine you need to suit your requirements and go with it. Anyway the life of a laptop, and indeed your life as well, is too short to really worry that much about it.
That's really reassuring.
I saw the upgrade options were high..with the 200 off sale and extra 15% off coupon it came to 2183 or something like that.. that was WUXGA 60gig 7200rpm hd, 1 gig ram pc3200 P4 3.2 HToh and ATI 9800 256mb Vid card... Not to bad with the discounts...but i'd still rather have a Sager
Anyone know whats up with Eurocom anyway? If you type in www.clevo.com and watch the heading..that blue bar top of your browser it says eurocom before it loads into Clevo's website.. Is Eurocom a front for Clevo... how close are these two companies? I thought them merely a OEM..like Sager..
post #12 of 78
Rumor has it that they are the R&D and testing arm for Clevos. They also appear to always be at the "front" concerning Clevos offerings. Don't know if this is true; however, have seen it several times from varying sources.
With my browser and machine, I don't see the Eurocom banner that you indicate. Did see a "reroute" screen.
No...when I tried it in firefox it gave me some kind of error so I tried IE and first the blue bar poped up eurocom then automatically switched to Clevos without actually loading Eurocoms site...but I thought that was strange.... What you say sounds believable..they knew about the 4750 way before anyone else..and the PCIE unit..just their launch dates never seem to be right lol..
woz007: i beleive Toms exact words were "AT LEAST a couple of months" meaning more then 2 most likly.
post #15 of 78
reason it loads eurocom first is because eurocom owns the www.clevo.com domain name, go do a whois lookup clevo.com is registered by eurocom. so it loads eurocom then gets forwards to WWW.CLEVO.COM.TW since Clevo is Taiwan based.
i have seen this happen before some company register a domain name that they shouldn't be using first to take you to their own webpage, then the real owner makes a complain there are 3 options.
1. disable the domain
2. transfer the domain over to the rightful owner (it's a very painful process when it's out of the USA).
3. Forward the address to the rightful owner webpage.
or it's just another trick eurocom is playing to make them look like they are close to clevo. i still don't buy the BS that they are so close to clevo their spec / release date is never right, until it comes close to Sager release date. how can you get the spec so wrong if you are part of the R&D? wonder if clevo even knows about www.clevo.com being in use.
Are you sure about them knowing about the 4750 the far of head of time? I heard of them when Adam first posted that specs for them i think in june. I don't recall Eurocom having information that early.
post #17 of 78
yes Eurocom announced D470K like 4 or 5months before Sager did, but that was with AMD FX51 cpu and a bunch of other errors, then corrected after PCTorque (Sager) announce theirs, like all their other announcments.
here is how i understand how this works, Clevo works out a roadmap of what's coming, eurocom makes up BS specs and announce them the month they receive the roadmap, Sager waits till the Specs are close to final before releaseing it.
post #18 of 78
What Tenchi said is pretty close.. They announced what we call the 4750 way back in..febuary I believe..same with the Phantom or the 8790 replacement....course their dates are way way wrong....And like Tenchi said the spec's keep changing..
Dell has a 30 day exclusivity of the ATI 9800. This started on July 27, 2004 I think. I would expect that other companies are working on their ATI 9800 offering at the moment and as soon as the 30 days are up, it will be available by several other companies. It would be very surprising to me for Sager to not have the 9800 available. I fully expect HP/Compaq, Alienware, & Voodoo to have a 9800 laptop available. Otherwise, what is the point of the 30 day exclusivity if other companies will take longer after the 30 days to release their offering?
Anyways, I was just about to buy a Sager 4750 with the 9700, but after seeing the 9700 benches compared to the 9800, I will wait for the 30 days to be up before I purchase. Ideally, I would love to get an AMD64 3400+ or 3700+(if available) with 9800. But if Sager doesn't offer this, then I will have to go with a company like HP...possible Dell if they have 17inch with the Bright display.
College starts this month for Northern CA schools. Luckily im going to the L.A. Ca area where I will be starting school on September 23. I will be there on September 19. This means I must buy a laptop by the first week of September. Hopefully Sager will get things rolling with the 9800 as soon as the Dell 30-days are up.
If Sager does plan to make some back-to-school sales with only a 9700...they need to:
a) offer the 256mb 9700 that they have with the P4 laptop in the 4750.
b) cut their prices because the 9700 is now not the latest GPU.
c) cut their AMD64 prices because AMD recently cut their prices and their current 3400+ pricing is = to AMD's new 3700+ price.
d) Compete with Dell by offering an 8x DVD+-RW Dual Layer internal burner.
e) all of the obove
and the answer is E
