no error messages, it just hands there and loads alot. The cd drive light flashes heaps but after a while, if I click on it, windows pops up its 'this program is not responding" error. It would be nice to have an actual error to speak about but its just hanging.

Try adjusting the video accellerating option in powerdvd on/off.

Sounds like you have problem with your DVD drive. Try to copy some files from a DVD disk to HDD. If the problem with hardware you'll get an error.

I had the exact same problem, here's how mine went:

When I first got it with all stock drivers it would play DVD's fine. I installed the Omega 4.7 equiv drivers and it wouldn't play DVD's anymore, they would just sit in the drive and spin. I backed the drivers down to the Omega 4.5's (not for this reason, I was just testing gameplay with different drivers) and the DVD's started playing again.

I know there are playback issues with 4.6 and up but I don't think they are related to getting the DVD to play. This makes no sense to me but you might want to try a different driver if you are using 4.6 or 4.7. Who knows, it could have been one of the reboots that fixed it. Rebooting cures a lot of things.

No good. I tried putting on the 4.5 omega rdivers and got no difference. I did however try to use windws media player for playing a movie, jsut to test a different player and it told me that there were copywright protection issues and it couldn't play the disk. anyone have any ideas about this?

Figured it out. it was as simple as powerdvd/zoom player using the wrong codec. still getting the copy protect fault in media player.
