I was having so much fun, I ordered TWO Thinkpads!!!

Just ordered today:

Notebook #1:

IBM Thinkpad T42 14.1" SXGA+

Dothan 735 1.7
256MB
40GB 5400
CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo
Radeon 9600 64MB
Wireless b/g (ordered Modem/Bluetooth card)
1 year parts/labor warranty
Base system price: $1,664 + tax + shipping with 1 year warranty

Also added:
3 year Thinkpad Protection + upgrade to 3 year warranty $299
Extra 9 cell high-capacity battery for $89 (on sale)

TOTAL PRICE: $2,052 + tax + shipping.

Notebook #2:

IBM Thinkpad T42 15" SXGA+
Flexview IPS technology LCD panel
23798DXU
Dothan 735 1.7
512MB single module (I will add a second 512MB module myself)
60GB 7200
CD-RW / DVD-ROM combo
Radeon 9600 64MB
Wireless b/g
Bluetooth
3 years parts/labor warranty
Base System price: $2,159 + tax + shipping with 3 year warranty

Also added:
3 year Thinkpad Protection (Accidental damage coverage) for $169
Extra 9 cell high-capacity battery for $89 (on sale)

TOTAL PRICE: $2,417 + tax + shipping.

These were both SPP (Shareholder Purchase Plan) prices, so they were 10% to 15% off the IBM web prices.

My initial intent is to return the one that I like the least, but ya never know!!! Who knows, I may send them both back!!!

all that and you go and order an IBM? lol

j/k hope you like it

good luck. may i ask why you went with IBM... it seems i cant find enough pro's to go up against the cost factor. Even with my 25% off it still doesnt hit my price range :/

I will see how I like it when it gets here.
(30 days, and all that, if you know what I mean).

I looked and looked and looked, and never found anything that I really wanted.

Between this and a HP nc6000, I never could decide, so I finally just ordered this, and we will see how it is.

Again, I never found what I really, really wanted, and I had to get something, finally.

With either IBM or HP (or Dell, which I WON'T BUY), if you add on the GOOD accidental damage coverage, you have a really good warranty.
Chances are that, within 3 years, something will happen that will "total" the notebook, and you will get a like-new replacement that will more than likely be an upgrade. A few other online vendors offer this, but only a very few. Next to Apple, IBM supposedly has the best support in the business. Also, with the Shareholder Purchase Program (SPP) I didn't find it too expensive. $1,600+ extras for a 14.1" with 9600 is not all that much money.

you can't beat that kind of warranty, which is why IBM is so popular with businesses.

That's how I got 2 Dell upgrades (refurbished of course).
Only problem was, I didn't like any of them.

I am considering an IBM for my wife. She seems to like the trackpoint vs the touch pad mouse and she doesn't want to use an external mouse. Also, she tends to prefer IBM keyboards. She likes the Compal that I bought for me, but the screen resolution makes things just too small. The only thing that is a little annoying about the IBM laptops is that they are so expensive.

Let us know how that IBM works out for you.

Good choice. I'd probably purchase the same system if it had a 128mb M10 instead of the 64mb one...64mb just isn't sufficient IMO.

I have to say, I do not understand you at all.

Trust me, this is going to be small. Very small. So very small. Chances are, you'll run it at XGA all the time and keep telling yourself, "why didn't I pick XGA? Why??"

Happy to see that you made your purchase after all, though

I was hoping you'd end up with an IBM... I love mine... not perfect, but damn good.

Do you remember why you passed up on the Tecra M2??

also is the 2k price with the added ram and HD?

edit: oh i see the disclaimer... any idea on what the total cost will end up being with ram and HD?

ok i can see the IBM for the warrenty... but you can get the same if not better warrenty from your insurence provider. Its a computer replacement warrenty. I had this when i was at an apaertment. My computer fell off the table (due to a cord that was acidently pulled) the thing came frashing down to the floor and took most of the parts with it.

Within a week i had a check and from that i got a new PC a week later. beleave me that im taking it out again with i get a notebook

Well, I don't understand me either, but....

I WON'T RUN IT XGA. If I do, I will return it within the 30 days.

I discovered a program called Liquid View.
Liquid View makes almost everything bigger in XP. Not just the desktop, but applications also. It changes the DPI of everything on the fly. Really cool.
So, you get the advantage of larger fonts and icons with higher resolution. Any size that you want.
I tried it on a 14.1" SXGA+ system here at work, and I simply used it to make 12 point Arial the same size as 12 point Arial on an XGA screen. Simple as that!!
It won't make anything smaller, but it will make stuff larger.

They also make Liquid Surf, but I don't use it. I am using Firefox to scale webpage sizes.

I am not a webpage designer, so webpages out of intended proportion don't bother me very much.

Seriously, Liquid View is really nice.

I passed on the M2 because of reviews I read, one of which said that it had a lot of keyboard flex.

2K did not include the added ram and HD. It did include the extra 9 cell battery, 3 year warranty and accidental damage protection.

Awesome system! You're going to love it.

To answer the naysayers, you really have to get your hands on and use a thinkpad to understand what just the specs don't convey. The Keyboard is perfect, it feels incredibly solid, the dual pointing devices are in the exact right places, and in general everything is engineered and designed perfectly (such as the wrist rest) from a user standpoint.

I prefer to have any potential computer claims not involve my homeowner's policy or company. I have a hard enough time keeping a decent homeowners policy. Don't want to be cancelled due to a computer claim.

no, its not part of the home owners insurence. you can buy computer insurence from your insurence company. Its a completly different policy, I know USAA offers it.

LOL I was a lurker/reader of your quest to purchase a lappy and had been away on vacation. I was actually about to post the question to see if you had ever decided and now I have an answer and can rest easy. Congrats on your purchase. Hope you love it as much as I love my new lappy.
