Arctic Silver 5

Hi Everyone,

I've been lurking around here for a while and finally bought a CL56.
I've been thinking of applying AS5 when I get it.
I checked and applying it doesn't void the warranty if done right.

My question is this... is it worth it? I've heard that the CL56 runs pretty cool as it is.
It doesn't seem like to much hassle. I've read the "unofficial Sager guide" here on these forums. Is there a guide like that for the CL56?

What about applying it on the GPU? Is this something that can be done?
Will it help a lot?

Thanks!

Applying it on the GPU would probably help you attain high OC speeds.

Applying it on the gpu will allow for higher ocing, however, beware, sometimes a gpu can only handle being oc'd very high for a short amount of time. If gaming for an extended period, you'd have to oc the gpu at a safer level. The AS 5 will allow you to have a faster core and memory clock as your stable level.

Artic Silver lowers your average temp by 1-2 degree's at the most. Its really not worth doing unless you enjoy that sort of thing.

-3 celsius temp change is pretty good, and the silver tends to last longer than the thermal pads that come with most laptops. It doesn't dry out and flake like the pads.

It's not a miracle cure and doesn't give you 10 degrees to play with, but if 3 is worth it (which it is to me) then go for it. Reapply new paste every few months if you're really into it.

Ok, so I won't be overclocking the GPU. I really don't need to. I game a little but there is not enough time in the world and my current priorities have gaming pretty low on the food chain.

Will applying AS5 help keep the GPU cooler? No overclocking, just want to know if it will help.

I don't see how it can hurt. It's $10 and a few minutes of time.
Also, has anyone lapped the heat sink on the CPU?

it will always help your gpu cool a little bit faster. its not going to make it feel colder externally thou if thats what your asking.

it should make the fan come on less often and for a shorter time tho right?

<tweak_hp>it should make the fan come on less often and for a shorter time tho right?</tweak_hp>

that would be the desired effect because my current laptop is a noisy bastard.

I mean no disrepect to anyone that has done it, but I have to say that it is not worth the hastle. If you are running the system hard enough to get the fan to come on (such as gaming, encoding, whatever), artic silver isn't going to stop the fan from coming on or reduce the occurance of the fan coming on.

During regular use, the fan on my CL56 rarely comes on. "Regular use" for me is surfing, working with a document in Word, playing Winamp streaming over wireless; all the at the same time. When I run Quake 3 (I like classic FPS, lol) or Call of Duty the fan comes on and stays on for the most part. I don't have Artic Silver on this laptop, but I do run it on my gaming desktops. I don't think that my fan on the CL56 will come on any less with the artic silver as opposed to whatever mwave puts on (I am fairly certain that it is NOT Artic Silver).

On my desktops, Artic Silver does lower the temps by about 4 degress during load and a little less during idle. I have extremely good airflow in my cases, however. I am speaking celsius. I would expect that the temperature reduction would be less on a laptop.

If I ever have to take the laptop apart, then I might consider putting on Aritic Silver 5. I certainly won't open up the system just to put on artic silver, however. Keep in mind that this is just my opinion. I have not tried Artic Silver on my laptop. I only have experience with Artic Silver on desktop systems that I have built.

all owners of the ecs G556 have suffered from long periods of the fan running. One guy decided to open up the laptop and apply AS 5 to the cpu and gpu. And behold!!! The fan noise was greatly reduced.
However, the CL56 is very well-cooled and because you're not an intense gamer, I would put AS 5 under the "unneccessary" category.

Do you have to remove the thermal pads to put on the Artic Silver, or can you just put it on top of the pads?

Where do you put the AS on the GPU? Just on top of it?

You have to fully remove the thermal pad BEFORE apply the Arctic Silver. Remove it and clean the area with alcohol and a Q-Tip.

Follow the instructions on the arctic silver website:

http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm

It is fairly easy to do, just make sure the area is clean and don't apply too much.

The CL56 doesn't have a thermal pad. It has some sort of black grease on the heat sink. I applied Arctic Silver 5 as soon as I got my laptop. I couldn't figure out how to take off the heat sink off the GPU.

I underclock my MR9700 to 125/125 when I'm in doing general office work in windows.

I don't notice any difference in the 2d rendering speeds.

I have it set up to automatically clock up to stock speeds when I open up CAD, Photoshop,or intensive games.

Seems to me that reduces heat more so than a dolop of AS (which is a hassle to get just that extra 2 degrees...)

Saves battery power too

According to Got Chow, the cl56 has no heatsink on the video card.

And after reading through his article, I believe him.

What are you guys using to underclock/overclock your vid cards?

Meant to ask how to do this also, so I am asking the same question as evo below....

how do you get it to change speeds for specific programs?
