ZoneAlarm vs. Sygate

Thread Starter
I'm looking into a firewall for my notebook. Which do you guys suggest: Zone Alarm Pro or the Sygate Personal Firewall Pro? Thanks.

i have ZA on my laptop and Sygate on my desktop. Seems like ZA gives me more choice than sygate on what gets through, but maybe that's just my settings. ZA can be more intrusive, I think, but that doesn't bother me, I'd prefer to know everything that goes back and forth.

Zone Alarm too.

I use zonealarm. It's easy to use and configure. I recommend it for a personal firewall to use. Haven't tried sygate.

I like Agnitum Outpost Firewall.

It depends on how much you know about firewalls, and how much you want to customize. Some people hate getting popups all the time, but I like to see exactly whats going on. I have used all of them trying to decide which one I like, and Outpost won out. Supurb customization, allowing you to allow access on some ports or some IP ranges, and not others. If your not too familiar with protocals, ports, IP ranges and so on, go with ZA. Otherwise Outpost is far far superior.

I have Sygate installed right now. If you want good support, try Norton internet security, but Sygate lets me know if somebody is hijacking my appications or scanning my ports and thats all i need to know. it is very easy to set up and get running. tried zone alarm, have to play with it a bit more.

If the retail version is the same of the trial, I won't buy NIS. As my avatar says: "So weird"... it displays a lot of warnings if I use IE. IE!!! I know it was probably a configuration problem, but even so, I'm just using another one and it's great.

Has anyone used McAfee firewall? I can get the latest version of that through my company, or I can use ZA or whatever.
McAfee seems to work well. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on it?

I have tried Norton Firewalls but I don't like them at all, they have very little configurable settings. Right now I have Sygate Personal Firewall Pro on my laptop and love it. It tells me everything that is using the internet, it also lets me know what port it is using both local and remote, what IP is being used both local and remote. It tells me everything i could ever want to know. I have also used ZA pro, and it is a good firewall if you don't want to mess with any settings. If you want the ultimate in security and you know how to set it up, choose Sygate.

I just downloaded ZA for my desktop. Pretty happy concidering it was free. However, I keep getting notifiaction for "update.exe." I think its the Windows Update program, but even though I tell it to permit it every time, I still get messages. I got so fed up I set the program monitor to "low." Anyone know how I can stop this message?

lol, another benefit of Sygate, there is a little benchmark next to "yer or no" that will make it remember it forever iif you have to.
ZA has that too, its just that there seem to be dozens of "update.exe" programs, all related to Windows Update.

personally I prefer Sygate over ZA

Its been a while, so this may no longer be the case, but Zone Alarm crashed my internet connection and has lagged my comp (this was like 2 or 3 years ago and Zone Alarm should have improved.)

I went with Sygate and I'm pretty happy with what I got, but there are free versions of both out so you can always try them out.

I have been a sygate supporter for a while, I've never really liked ZA and NIS screwed my desktop comp pretty good a while back

I don't think any of these programs are needed at all. If you are careful you don't even need a virus scanner. I didn't have anything of these on my desktop for years and never once had any issues. I do like to have a virus scanner for the movies and files I d/l from P2P, but everything else in completely unneccessary unless you have confidential files from work on your laptop, but then again, anyone needing that kind of security would just have removable storage for that stuff that could be completely removed when not being used.

Yes If you are EXTREMELY careful you won't need one but why lose all the fun if you are afraid of getting a virus. Also nowadays you can get viruses by looking at jpeg images on websites so you aren't safe. Also who knows how much spyware you had on your computer.

Hate to burst your bubble but i used to think the same as you. I didnt really have any viruses infections or problems with my laptop (or so i thought). What happened was it started slowing down drastically and i'd sometimes notice the HD whirring madly when i wasn't doing anything. I installed NIS and am NEVER using a pc without a decent firewall. Trojans, worms and backdoor attacks are NOT your friend.

What about the built in ICF (internet connection firewall) available from Windows XP?

I use it on my Local Area Connection and Wireless Connection... it does not give me any feedback just works silently in background

Opinions?

Its better than nothing but really insufficient.
