The "Tweaking Doom3" Thread - Page 2

Well guys think about it, image cache, that's how much is reserved to cache the images I.E. the bigger the cache the more images can be loaded quickly.

I tried 256....it was better than the 128 but not as big of a jump. I cant believe this thing works tho. lol Its SOOO much smoother, im running it in high now on 1024 with shadows and vsync off and its very enjoyable with little to no jumping. Well see how that works out when i get into some insane action tho...might have to bump it back down to medium, not that isnt gOrGeOuS too.

Initially I set it to 96 and noticed almost all of the GPU spikes were eliminated. I'll try 128 and hopefully it will get rid of them all.

Keep trying 128 and 256 people, and let us know which is best. I'm dying to know for when I get my game.

Keep that tweak in mind all!!

Also, people are mentioning having issues with lighting. The game is naturally dark (makes it hella-scary). Because you can't shoot and have your flashlight out, fast switching is vital. Consider binding flashlight to the rightclick on your mouse, because there is no secondary fire type on the guns.

Nice. I'm gonna tweak later with my instructions from a friend.

God, I hate the auto overclock of the nvidia drivers. It overrides all settings that I make in powerstrip. I tried omegas but most of my games became very choppy so i ditched em.
i just put em on, so i have to go check em out. later all!
there covering this in the gaming section too. I tried 512, but it didn't seem to do much. i got 20 fps on ultra at the next highest resolution, but its pretty choppy at that setting.
hmmmm. this game is strange, or else my computer is strange. have just reinstalled windows blah blah blah. have all the latest drivers, and everything is clean and nice. i power up doom 3, put settings to medium on 800 by 600 res, start a new game, opens up the console and writes that thing that makes me see how many fps i´m running at, notice i´m running at about 30-40 fps... BUT THE GAME IS FREAKING UNPLAYABLE!
turn that smooth mouse thing up halfways in the options, and add a hell of a lot of stuttering, and you have my play experience...
and when i think about it it has been like this in farcry also. and i just thought that that game was supposed to be half-stuttering... now this is driving me mad.

edit: after playing some more i can say that i honestly cant see any difference between playing at LOW settings 640x480 or HIGH settings 800x600... both runs at ****... even at low settings, while turning off everything under "advanced" the game stutters like mad... i´m beginning to feel my gpu might not be as it should be.

agreed

Ive decided that i get the best play with 256 (havent tried higher), medium on 1024x768, i also turned the shadows off just b/c id rather have the framerate. But its smooth as silk, never slows down at all. Mind you i can play on high with slowdowns on very intense parts, and ultra high doesnt seem much different than high to me. Medium still looks amazing
post #35 of 100
i'll be testing it tomorrow when I get it.
haha, i just tried 512..played it on high 1024 and it didnt studder at all..Im thinking half of my ram (1gb) might be right on b/c i did seem to see and increase with it compared to the high on 256 @ 1024......geez i need to stop playing with these tweaks and just play the game.

Here's a question... whenever I access the console I see a couple of warnings such as Could not load sound. It doesn't seem to effect the gameplay at all and I think it started showing up after I modified the config file with a few tweaks.
I noticed that too, im not sure what it is tho...did you make sure it doesnt do that when you have it set to default?
I'm almost certain that these warnings didn't come up the first time loading without tweaks.

This is what I modified in the config file:

seta image_useCache "1" [enables it]
seta image_cacheMegs "512" [number= half of total ram]
seta image_cacheMinK "25000" [number greater than 24000 is required]

i've heard people saying that turning the first one to 1 cases crashes.
