This is what I modified in the config file:

seta image_useCache "1" [enables it]
seta image_cacheMegs "512" [number= half of total ram]
seta image_cacheMinK "25000" [number greater than 24000 is required]
I only put 512 to the cacheMegs....i didnt change the useCache or cacheMinK and its running fine. What do the other two do anyways?

My Chances :/

Hey, Just new the the forum here...

Specs are below. I don't have an alienware (funds limited), so as of last year, I have the below Dell Inspiron 8500.

On order is a Geforce FX GO 5700, unfortunately, I only have a 4X MB so the card won't even be running at full potential. I had 2 X 256 Ram, but on order as well is a Gig of PC2100 DDR 266 Memory to add to the other stick of 256, putting me at 1.25 ghz Ram. Pentium 2.4.

Do you all think I'll be able to run this game on Low settings, 800 X 600?

I ran 3DMARK 03 yesterday a few times, and went from 1100 to 1240, witht he lap top cooling fan running, All graphics settings at High performance (Direct 3d and Image settings) and Vsync Off, but with No sound.

Will the sound test possibly help my benchmark?

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions.. I read everything on here about tweaks and stuff and I just don't know what will be best for my lap top, if I can even run this game at all on low settings.

Thanks for any help !!

Question....
Will a 3.2g A51m with 9600 and 60g 7200 perform Doom3 better with 2g of ram compared to an identical system with 1g of ram?
Flip - I think you mean 1.25 Megabytes of ram, not GHz. Also, try running 3dm03 at th edefault settings, otherwise it is difficult to compare to others. Where are you getting the 5700 from? Dell? I was not aware that they offered that card as an upgrade...AW was the only one I knew of, and it won't fit in your Dell.

You should be able to play D3 at all low settings, but it might lag a bit in smokey or zombie filled halls.

Couldn't hurt...except in the wallet

oops, sorry guys. I wasn't even paying attention to the fact that this was the alienware thread. I got linked here from another forum so I just responded without even searching the rest of notebook forums.

I got the vid card from Alienware and I am 90% sure it will fit into my lap top, but I'm not possitive.

When you said I could run everything on low settings, were you taking into account your thoughts about the new card not fitting and therefore having to use my old card: Geforce 4 4400 GO 64 MB?

B.c in that case, I think it might not work even on low :/

but thanks for the help. I'd still appreciate any suggestions, but i'll take my questions over to the Dell Forum.

I guarantee the go5700 from AW will NOT fit a Dell of any sort, the connections and geometry are different. If the go5700 is a daughterboard designed for your lappie by Dell, then it should work.

D3 was designed to run on pc's with 64meg vid cards, so you should prolly be OK to run on low at 640x480 or maybe even 800x600.

Flip, better call Alienware and cancel that order fast. AW cards will not fit anything except an Area 51m!!!! Those bastards shoulda told you that! You did speak to someone before you ordered it, right?

re:

Damnit, Not only did I talk to someone from alienware, but I asked SEVERAL people about it fitting, took pics of my slot, and then compared to pics of the card. One guy who I thought knew more about computers than anyone I know said he was like 90% sure it'd fit.

THEN, alienware told me that the card will fit, and that it will detect my 4X MB and adjust accordingly.

I had a bad feeling about the geometry. ****ING DELL won't let me upgrade my card to a 128 MB 8x/4x compatible.. GOD, I realy am regretting getting this dell, but when I got it, I knew 1/2 of what i know now about computers.

God i'm really pissed/dissapointed now.. SIGGHH

So everyone is FOR SURE it most definately WILL NOT FIT?
Yeah! I'm surprised noone else corrected you on this. Half of AW's customer support is smoking dope. AW laptop gpus will NOT fit anything but AW laptops. Someone else back me up here.

True.

On another Doom3 related note, I just tried 1024x768 (High Graphics Settings) and it still looks great. I pushed the ATi9600 up to 384/212 and the game is at a steady 30-60 fps depending on what's happening on the screen...bottom line, very playable!

Good news
Is the 384/212 pretty safe on the card?
My system get's hot as hell when I'm on multiplayer
Med 1024 settings, and I could easily fry a steak on my HDD cover,
I'm even thinking about going with a 5400rpm instead of the hitachi 60gb 7200 rpm that i have in there..

QUestion.,.. What do you use to see how many FPS your running at when playing D3?

Like I said, mine works really good at MED 1024 settings...
I'm using the ATI drives, I tried the Omega, but my computer freeze up all the time, and the 3dmark03 was about 50-65 more...
right now is at 2600 using the demo of the program...

PS...I bough my Area 51m m2 P4 3.2HT 800fsb just for this game, and it rocks in every way, Best decision i ever made...

make a shortcut to enable the console

(add this line here) ----> com_allowConsole 1

it should be c:\dir\doom3\doom3.exe com_allowConsole 1

like that....

run doom3

type timedemo demo1 in console screen

voila

i get 46 fps @ 800 x 600 high quality

on a side note bout doom3

Is the game so scripted that it may not be enjoyable to play second time around??? i guess what im saying is the AI in it pretty smart, and does it give alittle diff play,
i know i'll probally get flamed for this,, but i do find farcry to have somewhat
good AI, and it seems at times even though i know a level, somehow the AI will have a merc somewhere diff than before, like it adds alittle diff play,, which i find enjoyable playing over and over,,, is doom3 anything close to that, or scripted like COD..???
yea doom 3 is pretty damn scripted.. but i think that a second time through on a harder difficulty would be worth it.

I usually do this with good single player games:

1. Play through legit and on medium difficulty...avoid walkthroughs unless its completely hopeless.

2. Once finished, if the game was entertaining, play through it again with unlimited weapons and ammo...sooo much fun with good games like COD and Half Life.

My two and three thirds cents on the matter!
I'm with Craig on that one. Then 3. Would be harder difficulty and unlocking anything that can be unlocked int he game.
