Why do people hate on Dells? - Page 2

I've owned an AW, built my own comp, bought 2 hp's, and owned 6 dells. I've had good and bad experiences with dell. Let me say, there is nothing worse than the Indian mofo's at HP (no offense to indians by any means). Dell has always replaced not-so-perfect hardware and now with my business account I get SAME DAY SERVICE. You can't beat that.

Many of the people that frequent these forums are either computer enthusiasts, gamers, or people with questions. Many of the enthusiasts and gamers want the best of the best of teh best. This is why I bought my first AW. After a year or so the novelty wore off and it became just another computer. Because, that's what it is.. just a computer. Dell sells by mass so of course there will be some people with glitches here and there. But most people that have perfect laptops are happy and live on. The others search the net for help, which is actually how I came across this forum. if you look at the net sales from dell and the people on these forums and other forums, it is a very very small percentage.

Without paying the premium for AW or Sager or hypersonic, dell offers a loaded laptop for a decent price. To get this decent price, the laptops do not get painted or all aluminum/zinc casing. So there is a sacrifice you must make. This sacrifice is why many people rant on Dells. Build quality is bad, blah blah blah. I was on the aw forums hating dells too once upon a time.

Just buy what you need and what you like and forget about what people say. If you really want a personalize laptop that stands out from anything on the market, mod it. Btw, I had a competition with my friend's AW 51m and another friend with an old sager. My mirror finish blue- led lighted- chassis converted-completely perfect "dell" won hands down.

People also tend to gripe more than they praise, especially when they have an audience (e.g. the Internet).

My 8600's case isn't the greatest - but at the same time, it's certainly not as bad as other computer manufacturers.

It's better than my old Hewlett-Packard, or Compaq for that matter, and the parts don't seem like they'll break at all on me. However, it's not as good as the IBM. But it looks far better than any IBM on the market.

The IBMs still look like laptops from the late '80s.
While I love my 8600, its just not the same quality computer as my Compaq notebook. I'm sure there are many who will disagree with me about that. My Compaq laptop has been going strong for almost 3 years. It came with a lot more features than the Dell 8600. The case is much sturdier( and heavier) It also cost a little more too. I have 2 other Compaqs that are going strong. All manufactures have their share of problems. Out of the 5 computers I have owned/still own, I have only used tech support once and that was on my wife's Sony Vaio. Sony support SUX badly. Dell's has to be better than that.

I think most people like to slam Dell because they are the largest reseller and want something that most of their friends don't have.

The main reason I bought a Dell was the price to perfomance value and the battery life of the 8600.

So true!

I think dells are fine for most people, for a better built case you can go to the latitudes. The IBMs are nice, but not a nice price. I put most of my customers into Dells, because they have the best combo of price/quality. Most people do not have an open pocketbook. I would rather save a few bucks and use the extra money to upgrade to the next one. But I never keep a laptop longer than 2 years, so dropping 3k seems a bit of a waste. I do not use laptops for gaming either.

Agreed with Spiike.

A friend has ab IBM R51 and I must admit that thing is hot, but I went with a Dell because I could get better performance out of it for far cheaper (even if I was to use the friend's EPP discount). Not saying I enjoy buying cheap electronics, but I mean, spending $3500 to get a comparable IBM (and that's without the 128 MB 9600 Pro Turbo video card!) just doesn't seem to be worth it. If I had $3500 to spend, I would have put it on an M60, anyhow, seeing how its graphics card is more oriented for my line of work than the ATi card.

I don't feel that Dell makes bad products. Perhaps they're trying a little too hard to make profit by using cheaper-than-the-most-expensive-manufacturer's parts, but I mean, come on, not every single bloody company can make products that are built like a brick. The IBM Thinkpad is a great laptop -- just too expensive for my needs.

And I definitely don't feel that most people should have any right to hate Dell because of outsourced tech support.

How many IBM Laptops have a mobility 9700 or are going to get the the mobility 9800 like the dells use? are there any? Just wondering. And if you want to talk about Cheap take a close look at Voodoo pc's web page, then look at sagers...they look pretty similar don't they...(just add some fancy paint to a sager)looks like even top tier makers will use lesser components. What may feel cheap to some may actual be lightweight magnesium and composites to make the laptop lighter.

Sager's aren't as expensive as AW and Hypersonic. Look at PcTorque's pricing.

you know what would make people love dells? if they included a free (cheap) paint job.. now wouldnt that be fun? at least it would save people like Spiike wasting time coming up with mods to make our laptops look cooler... imagine if dell intergrated all of his mods into their production line?

My school has a lab of dells and they said it was a failure (not sure what was the reason). But i like my 8600 very much. So far, i have tried an apple ibook, and an hp. Both comps last very long. hp still in some use. it is very lasting no problems for 7 yrs. as for the ibook, no prob too. 5 yrs now.

When it comes to Laptops i think a Dell is well worth the price. Lappys in general are very expansive..Dell lappys are at least on a human pricerange.
when it comes to stationary PCs I would never buy any prebuild system. Buy it the thing you want and put it togheter yourself.

I agree the IBM fans are annoying when they talk about Dell laptops. So what if their laptops have a better looking case? That's the only advantage they seem to have. Why would I pay all that money for a black case that looks like it was designed in the '80s?

Spiike hit the nail on the head. Good job

It all comes down to this: Cut the price in half for a less astounding case. That's not a big compromise. Go dell.

And i find it difficult to believe that parts like WUXGA, Mobility Radeon 9800 256MB, Dual Layer 8x DVDRWs to be considered "cheap"
