benchmarks with 9100, doom 3, and cat 4.9 betas

First post! This looks like a great forum!

Here are some benchmarks with my notebook in doom3. I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 with 2.8 ghz P4, I gb of ram, and the 64mb flavor of the mobility 9700:

43.5 fps 800x600 MED noAA/noAF
34 fps 800x600 MED noAA/8xAF
25.7 fps 800x600 MED 2xAA/8xAF
40 fps 800x600 HIGH noAA/noAF
28.5 fps 1024x768 MED noAA/noAF

For each of the above I ran demo1 3 times and took average of last 2 runs. This is with the cat 4.9 betas. I have the 9700 overclocked to 513/304. I imagine the 9100s and XPSs that have a 3.4 ghz p4 and a 128mb mobility 9700 will score significantly better. Anyone in here with this setup and doom3?

Doom 3 looks great on 9100 and runs smooth as silk. I'm quite pleased with the performance of the mobility 9700 but I'm looking forward to upgrading to the mobility 9800 (w/256mb).

did you OC your card with Radlinker or ATI tools? What is a safe temp for it?

I'm using radlinker. The GPU runs about 46C when idle and 51C after playing doom 3 for half hour at 800x600 high quality (noAA/noAF).

I'm amazed at how well this notebook cools. I'm about at the limit of the overclock on the 9700 because I get artifacts. I do not believe this is because of temperture.

I tried to install the 4.9's and it keeps saying I need to install a compatible hardware component. Anyone have any ideas why this is?

DH mobility modder?

Have you used the dh mobility modder to modify the drivers first?

I can think of no other reason why it would not work.

What do you use to check your temp?

I use I8kfanGUI. It is designed for the 8000 series but it works fine for the 9100. it can read the cpu, gpu, dimm, etc. temperature. I have not tested it on fans on 9100 but it does read temps.

Go to status reading tab to enable temp reading.

Hope this helps!

I feel bad that my first couple of posts to the forum were complaints, so I'll try to make a positive, albeit meager contribution now. Here are my Doom 3 benchmarks using "timedemo demo1" on my notebook:

Dell Inspiron XPS P4 3.2 GHz EE
Radeon Mobility 9700 (128 MB) - No Overclock
Doom 3: 1024x768, High Quality, All Effects, No AA, No VSync

Catalyst 4.7 versus Catalyst 4.9 beta (three runs):

Catalyst 4.7 - 19.6 21.5 21.5
Catalyst 4.9 - 20.2 22.6 22.6

Using the 3rd framerate of each set which seems to be stable, the Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers gave me a 5.1% increase over the Catalyst 4.7 drivers. I hope they can eek out a little more by the time these are released (and hopefully we'll see at least a little benefit from the Catalyst 4.8 release).
