by the way this is on a AW area 51m 3.2 HT, 1gb ram, 60gb 7200rpm, nvidia go5700

Doom runs well on nvidia for now.

I have 9700 ati instead. Doom and Farcry run smooth as silk on mines. You probally need to clean up your OS.

it ain't that, i just reformated my computer, and installed all the newest drivers, and have norton system works and run all that (speed disk mainly) all the time, i still don't know what the deal is

Dude. Doom 3 is all indoor and frankly, there isn't a huge difference between medium and high. In Far Cry, you're rendering ALOT more at a time, and there IS a huge difference in the settings.

Farcry is far more superior than Doom3 in a lot of ways. Frankly, I'm really disappointed.

Doom 3 performs better on Nvidia card because they're better at openGL games, and weaker at directX games, which far cry is. Most of the FX series apart from the 6800's were slower at far cry than their ati counterparts.

Please enlighten us. So far for my experience of playing both, that Doom3 is the far superior game.

Guys, its difficult to compare Doom 3 and Farcry as games or as engines. Doom 3 is an action game set with hell unleashed with the intent to scare the balls off you while having some shooting fun. Far Cry on the other hand is an almost tactical shooter based in a tropical setting with the whole game idea being that you adventure and find your own path through the levels and use tactics to defeat your enemies.

Far Cry is primarily outdoors wheras Doom 3 is primarily indoors thus their engines cant be compared in that respect, they were built to render different moods, different settings and different gameplay.

They are simply not like enough to compare them directly. I have really enjoyed Doom 3 thus far even though I am not fully through it yet. At this point I prefer Far Cry because I really liked choosing my own path and defeating the enemies and completing the objectives the way I wanted to. Doom 3 on the other hand so far is very linear and scripted. Is that bad? I dont think so, but for my style of play I prefer Far Cry but not because I think the engine is any better, I couldnt compare the two.

Take from this what you will, it is just my opinion and I'm not trying to force anyone to believe my statements. Thanks for the read.

I totally agree with you.

For others, there's no reason to ask for enlightenment about opinions. It's rather doubtful one's reasons for their thoughts will change yours.

Myself, I think Far Cry is a much better-looking game and I like the gameplay better. On that note, I think even Painkiller looks better than Doom3, and it scales even better than Doom3 on lower hardware.

To contiue my opinions, Doom3 = all hype.

Talkgaming, excellent post.

All I said in mine was that Far Cry had alarger, more noticeable difference in image qualities compared to Doom. You can't really compare the engines though.

Each one has special sides. Doom3 has specialized doll effects for falls and flying from explosions. Also, Doom 3 has the super realistic lighting (they took extra care in it from things I read). Farcry has the most tactical requirements i've seen in a game yet. And the sheer beauty in all the details of the game is incredible. Screw off, you can't decide which engine is better.

We'll need to wait until developers start to license the Doom 3 engine or the CRY Engine to see which is more powerful

Agreed.

I would just like more reasons WHY people think Far Cry is better than Doom3 rather than an EMPTY statement. I'm not trying to change anyone's mind, I just like to see the reasons why people feel the way they do.

Well, if you're lazy, and working on a game with alot of water... CRYengine is for you

In my opinion, I think Far Cry is a better game simply because of the freedom your given due to the whole setup of the game. I prefer to choose what I do and do it on my terms. In Far Cry you are given an objective and in most cases you have a wide array of options in how to complete it. For example, one of the missions named boat required you to destroy three different radio transmitters or I think they were jamming stations, either way, you grabbed the explosives and then you could grab a gunboat and drive on over to the next island and shoot everyone on shore, or you could grab a small raft and sneak to the island and make it to the transmitter with minimal resistance, or you could swim if you wanted to do it the hard way. It was simply up to you, and thats just getting to the island. Dont get me wrong, I'm having alot of fun with Doom 3 and its scaring the crap out of me at times, but you asked for a reason why I prefer Far Cry, there ya go.

Once again though, they are two very different games when it comes to gameplay, so liking Far Cry over Doom 3 isn't a direct good vs bad thing, its just my style of play.

People like different things, I could see that some people would rather have the gameplay of Far Cry over Doom3, I just wanted to know WHY. So I am curious WHY someone would be dissappointed in Doom 3 (I'm looking towards Tanker-X's direction).

The game has a very unique atmosphere, and is scary as hell! The graphics add beauty to the gameplay's brains. Like I had stated before, you can make descisions on what path you can take also in this game, even though it is on a more subtle level. Many of us believe that the game succeeded in all of its hype. It has a constant scary atmosphere, the AI is not dumb at all, the level design feels like a realistic location, and the graphics are far better than Far Cry (to play the game at max settings, you'll need a video card that has not even been released yet).

Well, the level variety is fairly limited when the level is set in a space station on Mars (according to how far I've been in the game so far, who knows what the later levels have in store), chew on that.

I completely agree that Doom 3 is an awesome game, I havent been able to put it down long since I got it but I prefer Far Cry for the type of game it is. But as far as survival horror/action games go, Doom 3 is top on my list.

Also, have you guys been going to the websites that are listed in the emails in Doom 3? martianbuddy.com is one of them, it doesnt spoil anything to go there but I think that the counter on the bottom of the page is pretty cool, puts a face on how many people have been reading the emails. I've been refreshing the page now for a few minutes and its crazy how the unique visitor number keeps soaring, either lots of people are hitting that point in Doom, or they have been reading posts like this

Well, in response to RdLdr1 I can play Doom3 at maximum settings (Ultra settings with 16x anti aliasing) and I still am not as impressed as I was with FarCry (at full settings). In case your wondering, I am running it on a P4, 3.2Ghz, w/ 1 gig ram, and a Geforce 6800 Ultra OC. OC stands for over clocked. It is a BFG brand card with their own overclocking settings built in the card. It is as fast as the Ultra Extreme. Anyway, back to the business here. What atmoshpere? It's dark! Great! can't see without the damn flashlight, can't shoot without a gun. Constantly switching is a stupid idea. Farcry was outside, far more rigerous on the VC than an inclosed space. I have been playng Doom3 for a week and I still am running around in the dark. The AI is all the same. Easy to avoid and easy to trick. FarCry has way better AI. "Graphics far better than Farcry" I highly dissagree. Yes the character models have more detail, but have you noticed the humans heads are polygnal? They look like cone heads. The lushness of FarCry with the water and reflections, obviously you have never played FarCry at maximum settings, I honeslty think you would change your tune. Doom3 textures ar dark and drab and very repetitive. They also have little to know dynamics in the game where FarCry has a ton! In doom3 the weapons DO NOT light up the scene when you fire in the dark and the walls do not reflect any damage. I respect your opinion , but if you put these games next to each other you will find that FarCry has a lot more to offer than Doom3. Two years ago this game impressed me, now it just annoys me.

On another note, has anybody had problems running the game from the disk? I was getting a error saying that I have a CD/DVD emulation software running and that I must deactivate it before I can play. I ended up cracking the EXE cause I couldn't get the game to start.

Anyway I digress...
