doom 3 engine better than far cry - Page 2

post #21 of 61
For gameplay, its a matter of one's personal tastes.

I got this off Google images.
Which one would you think looks better? Which engine is more revolutionary?
Feel free to form your own conclusions.

Far Cry;

Doom 3

P.S. I HIGHLY doubt that you have a 512MB video card.

I'm not HATING on Far Cry, I think its an excellent and beautifull looking game. Doom 3 cannot match Far Cry in outdoor visuals (until the hardware industry catches up, watch out).

What I dont like is close-minded people HATING on the very revolutionary Doom 3. The game has in mind paying homage to its roots, it has maintained its original style while being cutting edge in the process.

Who says you need a 512MB video card...obviously you don't if I am running it full everything. Granted it looks better in some ways than not, but overall gameplay experience and quality FarCry has Doom3 beat. Doom3 is like a movie with a lot of cool special effects, but no real sustenance. So what if it looks good, if the gameplay sucks, then the game sucks. To each is own man, if you like then enjoy it.

Peace

Ultra Quality is the cream of the crop for DOOM 3. In Ultra Quality nothing is compressed. Normal maps, and specular and diffuse lighting are all displayed at full resolution with no compression. Because of this, there is a tremendous amount of texture data needed on the video card, upwards of 500MB. While it will run on lesser cards, you may experience hitching or pausing due to the graphics card having to swap textures in and out of its memory buffer. That is why this setting is recommended for 512MB video cards. There is nothing stopping you from trying this quality setting if you want to, just keep in mind that the memory load is huge.

Ultra Quality (max. quality): for 512MB video cards. Each texture; diffuse, specular, normal map at full resolution with no compression.

PC Gamer, the "World's Best-Selling PC Games Magazine" who has alot of credibility, reviewed Doom 3 and gave it an unprecedented 94%

Half Life, PC Gamer's #1 game of ALL TIME got a 97%, to put it in perspective.

Tanker-X, I respect your opinion, but realize that "the game just sucks" is not the norm.

You should've highlighted the "recommended" in front of those. It's not really necessary. If I can play at high with a 128mb card (they recommend 256mb for that high), it's very reasonable to think that someone with a 256mb card is playing at Ultra High, especially with a high-end machine like that.

But then again, that would crush the illusion that you're trying to create that he's lying about playing the game at it's maximum settings, so he doesn't really know what it looks like at them.

Games like Doom3 just make me feel like a rat in a maze, walls and ceilings everywhere.

There are plenty of people running on Ultra at 1600x1200...

A 512MB card will run Ultra best in theory...

But the 6800 series cards and some of the X800's (with equally fast CPU's and large amounts of RAM of course) are running Ultra quite well at great frame rates...

Check out the forums at www.planetdoom.com to hear about it...

I do not deny that he can run the game on full settings. I'm just pointing out "Who says you need a 512MB video card". Please do not put words in my post, I never accused him of lying.

I should have been more detailed, but I dont wanna bore everyone.
I realize now that 256MB video cards are perfectly capable of running Doom3 well, but not as good as a theoretical 512MB card.
post #29 of 61
You could run Ultra on a 256MB card, but there will be choppiness since the card will need to steam textures and what not constantly. A 512MB card will remove this.

RdLdr1, I think that you contradicted yourself with the Far Cry Doom 3 images... I think Doom 3 looks quite a bit better when compared to the Far Cry ones you posted.

I contradicted myself?? Where did I in my posts?

This is what I said about those pictures;

Doom 3 is pretty much an indoor game, though there are "outdoor" parts to the game. Its difficult to compare Doom 3's outdoor visuals to Far Cry's because Doom 3 doesnt have any "outdoor" levels to compare with (so far in my placement in the game, its pretty much comparing 'Paradise' and 'Hell').

P.S. Sorry if it seemed like I was arguing with you, Tanker-X, I hope its nothing personal.

Isn't it a great thing to have such awesome games to debate over!!

Anyone remember the long drought we went through last year?!? Man that was like waiting for the next Sopranos season to start

Like I said;

Right now we are in a Golden Age of Video Games.

The only way to achieve a 512MB video card at the moment is to connect two 6800's together, I am not doubting your quotes, but I do not experience any type of lag. Or notice a switching of the textures. They very well may be switching textues, but it is so damn dark you can't even tell. Like I said before, to each is own. Play it, love it , I don't care, Doom 3 is just keeping me busy until the real innovative (maybe not graphics wise) good games come out...Half Life 2. Oh yeah and Halo 2. Ahh Halo 2 a perfect example of game that will be awesome and won't choke anyones system in the process. An awesome game because of gameplay and story, not just eye candy.

I think we can all agree that we cannot expect anything different in Doom 3. It is what it is... Doom on serious steroids. Same gameplay as 12 years ago, same guns as 12 years ago same premise as 12 years ago, Run shoot Run, don't think, kill, kill, kill. That's it. It was my mistake to expect anything different. Personally as a gamer now a days, I expect more stimulation. Doom was great and innovative years ago, now ehhhhh, I have experieced and now demand more. Let's be clear I'm talken' gameplay here. I like games that make me have to scheme and plan in order to survive or at least have a purpose. Running down corridors and shooting into darkness, just doesn't do it for me anymore.

PEACE!

PS..Where's the scotch tape button. I'm tired of holding the damn flashlight

i usually am not a fan of shooters, far cry only kept me busy for a lil while before i started to want to go to the beach, but doom3 has me ready to piss myself and i must push on... i have no clue what you're talking about...

It is quite kick-ass. Now all we need is Half-Life 2 and Duke Nukem Forever.

Thread Starter
but do any of you have any solutions to the problems i was talking about on the original post for this thread, in other words to make far cry run good without looking like crap on the laptop specs i posted

I don't go by a single review by a magazine to judge a game, rather an average of all reviews throughout the community.

I'm not hating on any of the games but here is the bottom line

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpage...asp?q=doom%203

Doom 3 wins a hair hehe....

Pretty accurate. On my own site, I gave Far Cry a 9.3 but a 9.4 for Doom 3.
