Finally, my 4750 has shipped! I'm expecting it next Wednesday, hopefully sooner. For those of you who missed Part I, here's what I got:

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (the "+" means better than stupid Intel )
128MB ATI Radeon 9700
1 gig of ram
60 gig 7200 rpm HD
4x DVD+R/-R/RW/CD-RW
Internal 802.11g Turbo wireless
No Bluetooth (BT stuff is too expensive, not worth it)
No TV Tuner (who needs it if you've already got a TV?)
Windows XP Pro
Targus Sport Deluxe Backpack (blue n black)
Standard 1 Year Warranty (I'll be getting more when the year is up)
Repair Transit Coverage
and all of the other stuff that comes standard with the 4750 (4-in-1 reader, integrated camera, 3 USB ports, etc.)

grand total: $2663.27

So, on the Ogre rating system, being t3h sux0r and being t3h rox0r ...

PC Torque service:

Bang/Buck:

Not wasting money on an Alienware and having to wait over a month just to get to "Phase 3": I ran out of bananas

Wo0o0o0oT!!!!!111

I will do an ogretastic review once it gets here.

*Parts II and III were released in Japan and due to some binding legal agreements will not be shown in the forums.

I found out how to get the hard drive cooler too. Keep it on always on, it i will sound like a little desktop, but the hard drive will stay about 45 C as opposed to 54C when on laptop settings.
::Laughs:: You do that Ogre...
Mayaman I posted in your review thread....
Thats a big heat difference...what about when gaming..does it still shoot up to nearly 70c?
65 on doom. but not in the left wrist area anymore! you can feel hot heat coming up from the game controls after awhile, but usually then your into the game.

I wonder if you end up disabling PowerNow! when you take it out of laptop mode. The reason it may get cooler is the fan is always running because the CPU isn't throttling, which is bad for your CPU and nearby components
post #13 of 36
I don't see why it would be bad to be always on. If its plugged in all the time shouldn't that be the chosen setting. If you could have a setting where the cpu throttles down and keep the fans on then I would use that. Its a dtr so it makes sense for the fans to be on all the time to lower the heat.

I've played around with your suggestion and compared it to laptop using mobile meter and Dashboard.

When set to always on, the CPU speed and voltage max, regardless of utilization.
CPU temperature also rapidly rises, a few degrees every couple of seconds. You are right that the fans remain on (albeit their low setting), but I believe this is because of the elevated CPU heat.

At idle, when using laptop and powernow, the CPU idles at 40*C and the HD at 47-48. While idling using the Always on profile, the CPU idles at 50-51*C while the HD still idles at 47-48.

The fans will kick on for the system when set to laptop at 55*C for the CPU and rapidly bring it back down, as will changing from always on to laptop.

They will turn off when the temperature reaches 40*C, at which point it will rise to 55*C before kicking on again.

Personally from playing with things, I think PowerNow is a worthwile feature since, with the fans on low speed, there is a 10*C difference in the idle temps. This will obviously not matter as much during heavy utilization.

The reason the fans are always on when using the "Always On" profile is because the CPU never cools to the point that they shut off. Granted, it won't go up to 55*C either because they are on constantly, but it will shoot up much faster than on laptop if you're not constantly pulling on the processor.

I think i'll let mine cycle between 40-55*C on the laptop profile. It takes 5 or more minutes for it to reach 55. I see it as working the fans less and keeping more dust out of the system. PowerNow! also allows the idle temperature to be reached much more quickly, so on laptop your computer's CPU temp will fall more rapidly to idle (40) than it would to fall to idle (50) on "Always On."

I think PowerNow! should be left on because it'll generally keep your system cooler (on average) and will allow it to cool down much more quickly under fan power, and to a lower temperature, than if disabled.

The HD temperature always hung between 47-49*C, granted I wasn't making it haul ass or anything, and I'm sure the airflow helps when the fans are always on, but your trading a slightly cooler HDD temp for a higher CPU temp and more fan work.

Man, I'm a dork. I can't believe I just wrote a paper on my experiments with PowerNow!...somebody please shoot me .
Bang. Bang. I shot you dead. This forum is for dorks so I guess that makes me a super dork. But anyway, my harddrive temps are 45C at rest and 47 when gaming. my cpu is arround 47 C most of the time. to me the hard drive is important since its located under my left wrist. I would prop up your computer by the way to increase ventilation as well. I think I may use as5 to improve it even more.
ahem
air
your temps
a little off for the 'always on setting'

weeeeeeeeeeeeee i love this part
45*C idle always on setting
hd stays at about 42-43*C i think the as3 was really worth it
post #17 of 36
i wonder how much as3 or as5 would lower the temps if applied to the gpu. And if you drilled a few holes on the metal panel to further increase circulation.
which metal panel?...the silver one?...
Yep where the lights are. I wonder if that would improve circulation for the gpu.
i was thnking if i take out the hd and make a hole in the casing to try and help vent some air into there from the fan thats close by (there's a fan close to the ram and things like that maybe that might help drop some temps..
