Doom 3 fps tests on my i8600 - Page 2

Shadows off. With them on, any place with a lot of monsters or lighting effects will slow down considerably. Turn them off, you really don't miss that much without them. I have VSync on too, helps keep it looking nice without banding.

Only seen one mirror so far, the one in the bathroom on first level... loving this game.

No I mean that my frame rates drop top 5 FPS in some sections where the lighting is different. Thats with shadows turned off and 800x600 and quality on low.

I am using the standard dell video drivers.

omG, this game... yes, i too have sworn and jumped. i gotta agree with some of the reviews complaining about how you need to use a flashlight. i've encountered my first imp; i LOVE it when they scratch at me, it's hilarious.

loving it too, love it too =)

stang my fps is very much on par with yours. I wonder how much fps is gained with some extreme overclocking (people with heat mod done).

PM 2 GHz
768MB RAM
60GB 7200 RPM drive
MR9600 @ 384.75/270.00
Omega 4.7
1024x768, All advanced options on except shadows, 2x AA

demo1: 29.1 FPS
Just thought I would add my results for all to compare against. I have a slower processor than most but as you can see, this has very little effect on the game.

1024x768
Medium quality
All Advanced options selected except for "Shadows" and "AA"

30.3 FPS

19.9 FPS with shadows enabled.

Not real fussed on playing this game on the lappy. Maybe sometime this year, ATI might decide to pull their fingers out of their behinds so I can go buy an X800 XT for my desktop and play the game as Mr Carmack intended.

About the shadow on and off issue.. we all know that disabling the shadow will improve the framerate GREATLY. But with them off.. the monsters will be more visible ruining the purpose of playing dark and scary game IMO. But if you can't stand the framrate with shadow on.. then I guess you have no choice..

I play doom 3 now with 800x600 with 40-60fps with medium or high quality

No matter what you turn off, shadows are a neccesary, they add to the fear, and make you a better player, I see zombies coming because of their shadows alone.

just installed doom again, this time using the Omega drivers. I found my perfect settings, 1024x768 High, everything off except v-sync and high detail. It looks absolutely perfect, and plays completely seemlessly at 50-60fps. I deffinetely gotta try it some more, as i only tested it out for about 2 mins. Now all i gotta do is get some time to actually play the game... im still at the alpha labs.

This is really wierd though, because before i was forced to reformat, i was using the 4.9 catalyst and getting about 20-30fps in game using 1024x768 Medium i forget what settings were on, but deffinetely no v-sync or AA. And it deffinetely didnt look as good as now.

Just installed a patch, I read this in www.rage3d.com, it was said that this patch can increase the performance while playing doom 3 for ATI Card quite significantly...Here's few quote from the website..

"“When I read the shader it striked me how many texture accesses it did compared to the relatively short shader, even for stuff that could just as well be done with math for a small cost in instructions. Using a dependent texture lookup for POW evaluation makes a lot of sense for R200 level hardware due to instruction set limits, but for R300 and up it's much better to just spend the three cycles it takes to evaluate POW with math instead of risking texture cache trashing with a dependent texture read, which may be much more costly, especially since the access pattern in this case will be far from linear. Also, using math improves the quality too, even though it may not be very noticable in this game,”

Yep, I put that file in Doom 3 folders, turn on the timedemo1 (800x600, All on except Specular)... Before i installed that thing, the result is 26 (Forgot bout the actual speed :P) After i installed that thing, the speed increase quite significantly to 33 fps. Not that high, but its quite good though... U guyz should try this

Hi,
I have a decent 8600 laptop, that I got a couple of weeks ago. I tested it with 3dmark03 a few days ago and I get a score of only only 2790. This is with the dell default drivers and no overclocking. Is this normal?

re

Um... that 3dmark03 score is NOTHING to frown on.. Actually it's very good considering you are using dell drivers, don't have a super high amount of ram, and haven't oc'd or heat modded your card.

with my 64MB card, I get 1509 at the highest, so if that's any comparison.

Look on the Dell Benchmark forum and compare your results there. Your score is not bad at all
post #35 of 36
Ahh, Thanks, I was afraid there was something wrong with my system. I guess the other people who have managed to cross a score of 3000 with their 8600 all overclocked their system. Reason I am using dell default is that Simcity 4 Deluxe Ed performance was terrible with Catylst 4.7 so I switched back to dell default drivers. Now I am planning to start playing Far Cry. Wonder if this will be good enough to play that game at a decent quality and FPS level.

^your 3dmark03 scores were normal, but get the Omega Driver (located in the sticky). you'll see a large performance boost between those and the default dell drivers. Or, get the new Catalyst 4.9
