they (laptop makers) just use more flouresence lights and remove the anti glare coating on the lcd so you get a brighter screen.
most xbrites are still SXGA or XGA ...
my Tos comes with "tru-brite" it's brighter but resolution is only XGA.
same with the Sony's.

I'd settle for the UXGA any day ... got to have that resolution....

that Eurocom model (by Vinnie) sure looks alot like future release of the HP ZD7000 .... hmmm.!

The SONY VAIO VGN-A170 has WUXGA better than nothing lol what are you waiting for something like a acer 17 inch laptop?
Well a 17 inch Alienware would be nice. To be more specific, a new 51-m with the specs of the Eurocom Phantom would be kick ass.

My Spine hurts just thinking about it... I don't think even I would like a 13 lbs laptop!

Lol, free mobo upgrades, I'll believe that when I see it. Do you have any idea how much money they would lose on a deal like that? Not to mention the turn around time for the upgrade, if you guys wait over a month for it i'd imagine 2 months for an upgrade wouldn't be out of the question. Something tells me you guys are going to be given oc'd 9800's in the end, don't trust anything other than a press release / official announcement on their website.

lol my bad. Well if alienware really upgrades all of you guys to pcie mobos with a decent pcie card, i'll eat my shoes. They'd have to incur at least a $800 loss on each unit.

Wouldn't be nice if there was a standard created for all laptops!!!!

I also got a call...

...on this issue about the same time I sent my 51m off to the depot. I was told pretty much the same thing about the pci-e; that is that they were working on trying to find a solution. On another note, when Mr. Estrada was talking to me I told him my lappy was at the depot and he looked in on the case personally, I know this because the team working on the laptop emailed me and let me know he was watching . Very nice touch indeed, restored alot of my faith in Alienware. I'm confident that *something* will happen, and even if I have to pay for it I'll be happy.

I'm doubting it, but has there been any additional news about the potention for a PCIE upgrade for current generation 51m's?

Check This Out!!!

Here is my question to David Estrada from AW

I would like to know when we will be able to upgrade to the 9700 and also if you are comming out with the 9800 when should that be avail.? I would rather wait for the 9800 instead of the 9700 so i dont have to upgrade twice.

Just got an email from him and here is what he said
"Hi Blaze,

We are finally finishing up the logistics on the ATI 9700. The upgrade program should be available soon. We are hoping to minimize downtime for everyone and place the upgrades under a priority path.

We are still working on the ATI mobility Radeon 9800, but because ATI changed the spec and it is no longer PIN-to-PIN compatible to the previous GPUS, plus it is larger, we may end up running out of space and we cannot guarantee that it will work. We should know soon."

Anyone take on this???

What does he mean by "minimize downtime for everyone and place the upgrades under a priority path"?
"And what is the upgrade program" he's talking about?

LOL 2 min's after I emailed him he emailed me back and this is what he wrote
" Some upgrades will require the system to be sent to us for a resistor upgrade. This will allow the ATI 9700 to run at the higher clock speeds. So we are preparing logistically to provide this option and service to our customers."
I think this is good info...

I then asked him how will we know if we need the upgrade...
no reply yet, he works late, it's 8:17 FL time

UPDATE here is is reply
"We will work with them through our tech support to verify. If they have an updated revision, they will be able to buy the upgrade through the gearshop and install it themselves."

This really should be part of the sticky thread...i'll combine them
