I don't expect to see an x800 type card from ati, but even if they did, I still feel the urge to go nvidia anyways
post #222 of 500

Let me be the first to say ....

X800 or 6800 ?

and DAM-, I just bought a Go5700 2weeks ago....

Every thing here is nVidia, I think I will try ATI if they come out at the same time.

Well, it'd have to be a 6800 AGP, would it not? I don't believe nVidia is actually making 6800 Go's in AGP, sorry to crush your hopes.
Nvidia isnt making the cards themselves. The Notebook OEM's are making the actualy interfaces. Nivida and ATI are simply supplying the GPU. So infact whoever OEM's the laptop for AW might be making the formfactor needed for this laptop.

6800 & X800 & AGP

I remeber asking a question about 6800 PCIe cards using a bridge chip to convert from its AGP origins and thus being theoretically slower than than X800 cards due designed PciE. I also remember that most chose the 6800 card over the X800. Now it seems logical to me that the X800 card will need some interface chip to convert back to AGP, and it would be just like me to order the theoretical worst case for both Desktop and Laptop solutions.

Or in other words will the X800 be at a disadvantage being designed PCIe ?

The rep did say 6800 and sounded positive about it. However, I wanted doubt it if it was maybe a 6600 or something like that. The 6800 vs the 9800 almost seems unfair in a way. I will call aw today to see bout a discount, and also to double confirm the cards are coming out.
Yeah, if i had to choose between the 9800 and the 6800, i would definatley go with the 6800... I would imagine better performance, even though I have always been an ATI fan boy.

Something has felt a little off about this whole thing. So I recalled them today. Now they are telling me that nothing officialy has been anounced and they can't say either way if a GPU upgrade is going to be released or not. ONe guy sadi (since I called three times) that even if he did know that he wouldn't be able to tell me probably and I may be correct anyway because sometimes they aren't told till just before it is about to release. It is best no to get your hopes up about anything and wait till it is officialy announce ont he website. I should've saw that one coming!

I want Play Half Life 2 on Full Graphics mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
post #230 of 500

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you .....

I got the same responce when I i-chated with a tech rep today. Mostly he said "if they become available, you will see them on the website." One would think they were developing top secret aircraft at the real Area-51 or something. If they didn't make such cool computer stuff I'd have long since switched to voodoo or some such.

Hopfully, I got my notebook a little after a week it came out, and my mobo doenst even support the m9700 -_-. I really hope i dont have to play $1000 to get this card, because the 5600go just isnt cutting it anymore.

nebulous

seeing as how pci-e is faster then agp (its 8x for agp and 16x for pci-e) there should be no hangups at all with it. o and on a side note there really shouldnt be any hangups with the agp version because the new cards just started using all the stuff that agp offered.
So which one are you guys going to go with? The ATI or Nvidia? I dont want to do a mobo revision so which ever one doesnt require that Im going with...lol but which one do u think is better?
I don't know... if they come out with the 9800, then ATI... if they come out with Nvidia 6800, then Nvidia...

A thought

It just occured to me that we are hearing rumors of two new products from AW. The second we are talking about in this thread, but weren't we also hearing something recently about a replacement for the A51M-5500 ? What if the gpu for that product were compatible with the 5500/766?
It makes sense until you think about the number of 5500/766 owners that would upgrade the gpu rather than buy a new computer... back to the drawing board.

AGP is good but PCI-E is faster, Now if I were to choose an agp card for just the speed and durability I would either choose the x800 agp or nvidia 6600, but even then your loosing speed.
I know this talking about the laptop cards or whatever and What I probably is saying means absolutely nothing at this point.
CUrrently we haven't used the 8xagp to the max yet. This computer is so worried about upgrading and staying up to date that we don't even use everything to their max anymore. Sucks big time, but what else can we do?

Otherwise, I would go with with the nvidia unless there is a huge performance difference between the 2 cards, then I would go with ATI.

Anyone more info on this or was it just a cruel rumor?
