(regarding upgradeable graphics on the Area51m) - Page 14

If they are going to release the 9800, I would expect it to be after this new promotion for $700 off the 7700 laptops. Probably want to try and get as many new sales of them hoping 5500 owners are gonna switch before releasing something that might change their decision.

how many times have we heard that there working on the 9800 and its in its "test" phase? I mean hate to say but but my hopes arnt too high that there's going to be one..I hope Im wrong by all means but we've waited 4-ever and geeez nothing still....if it does come out it better not need a mobo replacement Im not going to send my in, I use it everyday at work... just i dont think that they may come out with one...sucks but time will tell. Reglardless May will be a tight month...STAR WARS!!!!

btw: I'm pretty sure the card she already has is the Go5700...would it be worth it or is it even still possible to upgrade to the mr9700? About the only things she plays is World of Warcraft and The Sim's 2 and is planning on playing Middle Earth Online if it ever comes out.
With the m9700 I can play WoW at 1680x1050 with anisotropic filtering in the middle and v-sync on and its playable, although it can slow down a bit in some areas.

the mr9700 is no longer offered by aw as an upgrade as far as i have been able to find so that is a no-go either.....damned rumors about a mr9800, getting peoples hopes up. i almost think its safer to just assume that it will not happen and then be very suprised and happy when it does show up. almost better than getting my hopes up time and again over something that is not so far made any appearance.

Any idea on price? I'm right on the edge of selling my 9600 5500 and putting the proceeds into building a hotrod desktop system, but if I can get this done for a reasonably small sum of money, it might make more sense.
I have given up on the upgradable graphics, time to save on a 7700 I think
post #270 of 500
Is the ATI 9700 technically considered an upgrade from the Nvidia Go5700??? The 9700 and 5700 were meant to compete against each other weren't they? Although, the 9700 is faster for gaming, the 5700 was made for different applications. Also, they were offered for the same price at the same time from AW. Just wondering...correct me if I'm wrong.

"Also, they were offered for the same price at the same time from AW"

And what was that price? I'm just trying to get a ballpark on what a GPU upgrade costs for the 5500. Thanks!

Nothing Cooler

I can think of nothing cooler than a new Cyborg Green 5500 with an Extreme Edition P4 and an MR9800 gpu. I would buy 2 of these units before considering a Zeno, Snooooooor, Grey 7700.
Come On Alienware !!! bring back the Uber cool colors and a notebook that doesn't make one of my shoulders lower than the other......
Does anybody have any idea what any of the 5500 upgrades cost?

I don't think they are offered any more and I can't recall how much they were offered for at the gearshop when you could buy them. Sorry....does mid 300's sound right?
Thanks. Yah, $300-$400 sounds realistic assuming they weren't looking to make a profit, and they weren't taking the original card back for any trade-in value. Not sure what they would do with them anyway, besides build refurb machines.
So what if my MR9700 doesn´t work any more in .......let´s say 2 years.I can throw away the whole machine right??
they were about 270$

Are they joking? They have NO extra parts in case someone calls up with a problem?
