I need a printer for my 8600 when at college. It will ahve top be fairly small. Is an all in one reccomeended or just a printer? What are some good models?

I personally like laser printers better than inkjets. I think lasers look more professional. However, they really don't fit your bill of "fairly small" all too well... so go with an inkjet. Lexmark makes some nice ones for not too much.

I picked up an HP 1210 from Target the other day for about $80. Its one of those scanner, printer, copier ones. Now I'm sure its not the best printer ever, but considering all you'll print out are term papers etc you don't need a high quality printer. Lasers are more economical if you print massive amounts but I wouldn't think they would be justified in your circumstances. Just buy whatever is cheap...printers are made to break.

I'm looking at the HP PSC 1350. thanks for ur help

I have a Canon i560 and I love it. Installation was easy and I haven't had any problems with it. PLUS, the print quality is quite good for an inexpensive inkjet, and it prints photos well too. Check out cnet's reviews on printers if you haven't already. Good luck!

I have the HP PSC 1350 and enjoy it. It's a small little box, so its great for a college dorm room (the all in one's by most other brands are too big and bulky). However, I must say that the speed isn't that great, and compared to the entry level 1210, I don't think its that much better. But a 1210/1350 is a great choice due to the size and functionality. If you have a digital camera, get the 1350, as it has the memory card slots.

The 1210 has an awful software set, and I haven't found a way to install the printer without the cr*p that comes with it. It is a total system hog. It is a good printer/scanner/copier, but I prefer the Canon MP360 I have. It prints fast, great quality, cheap cartriages and it is USB2 (doesn't mean much but scanning and printing large documents is faster). I would recommend the MP360. It has better software that tells you how much ink you have left each time you print (if you want it too that is), and you don't have to install the extra stuff that comes with it like the PSC 1210

I have the HP PSC-1315, it works great.. And is cheaper then the 1350, with just about all the same features as the 1350...

I have loved all the Lexmark and HP printers I ever owned, its the price of the damned ink that eats me up. I no longer print because of it.

sk24, pay no attention to not printing! lol (just kidding, IO). You might want to check with your roomie also to see if he (or she) is going to bring a printer... if you bring a PSC type machine, maybe he or she could supply a laser. (That's my situation, actually.)

actually, as far as lasers go, i like them a lot better than inkjets and have been using one for school, i'm looking at a new one (or was until it got discontinued), the samsung ml-1710, got great reviews and they're fairly small for a laser printer, if you can find one they're supposed to be very good, or the new ml-1740 is it's replacement and about the same size, before it was discontinued you could find it for $100 after rebate, now the new one i believe is about the same price, which is very good for a laser printer

Just be careful not to get a 35 pgm behemoth... nice printing speed but a wee bit big.
lol, yes, those speeds will certainly be a monster of a printer, also very pricey, but the samsungs i mentioned are in the ballpark of about 15pg/min, which is quite good for a cheap-o laser

You can find that samsung model on ebay a few buy it now auctions at $79... Just type in "ml-1710" in the search and then click on printers on the left of the page... And wahla, you have found the great samsung... LOL

a tech tried to offer me compensation in the form of one of those ****ty lexmark ripoffs but I declined because i'm almost positive ink cartridges must be purchased directly through dell. What a pain. of course, if its free, any inconvenience is largely minimized...
