8890 Sound Card Freezing

I've had this problem a while and am finally stumped enough about it to run to you guys for help. Ok, I'll try to be as detailed as possible...

At very random times, my sound card will simply stop working. The music I am listening to stops suddenly and won't play again. From that point on, NO sound will play.

This isn't a problem with the volume or anything like that. It feels as though the card just stops accepting any input. In Winamp for example, I can load an MP3 and click 'Play', but the music will not start. No error, nor does it even TRY to play. It just sticks at 0:00 forever. This has happened to me while using not only Winamp but Foobar2000, so I know its not a Winamp specific problem.

Sometimes if I want long enough, the sound will randomly kick back on. Rebooting always fixes the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on why this may be happening, or maybe something I can do to debug it better? Thanks.

hmm i had that same problem too... i always found that closing winamp or restarting direct sound fixed it without restarting... i mainly did kill winamp task from taskman.

since then, ive gotten an audigy 2nx and viola! problem solved

Sinoth - Sager doesn't keep their driver page well updated. I used to have some problems with my sound card, too, so I went to Realtec's website and got the most updated drivers (July 2004). Those are here. Maybe those will fix your problems.

Mattszeto - Is your sound quality greatly improved? Because I was thinking about getting the Audigy 2nx or the Extigy too.

yes, audigy has greatly improved sound quality... partially cause i'm using it in conjunction with the logitech z640s. its a really good combo. i didnt have nearly enough money to buy the extigy , thats why i went with the audigy, and it only cost me 55 after rebates.

i wouldnt recommend getting either though, if you are a frequent traveler, it should get pretty annoying haveing to carry around a little box, plugging it in where ever you go. but seeing that youve considered the extigy, i would think not.

I have that problem too, and I have to restart. Just restarting winamp doesn't help for me but I could try directsound.
