3D Modelling with M9

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of buying an 8887 to run Solidworks. Does anyone know of issues with the ATI M9 on Solidworks or Pro-Engineer or other openGL-based modellers?

The Geforce cards have an issue with multiple windows open, though this can sometimes be fixed with the SoftQuadro hack. Anything similar on the ATI?

There are some folkes who have problems with OpenGL and ATI cards (in general) and have exhibited some lock-up problems.

Do a Search for OpenGL and ATI (Infinite Universe Engine) and that should take you to a recent thread.

I work with maya and I Maya 5 doesn't seem to start. Maya 4.5 runs fine, but version 5 hangs on the intro window. My system is a 8887 with XP. When I get time, im going to check if I get any luck with Win2K.

I contacted Solidworks directly, and inquired about this issue. They say the M9 will have the same limitations as the Geforce with an 8 window limit(about). I asked them 4 times so far for their benchmarking software, but they never seem to get it to me... If you can get it, I will do it ;-)

I can't say for modelers, but I've run quite a lot of OpenGL games on this 8887, and they work very well. Then again, it's on a site run to help you learn, so this may only be the case for less advanced tricks.

By the way, a while back I decided to try to write a 3D modeling program of my own, but I never got close to finishing. However, I did succeed in constructing a good framework for the program, with multiple viewports and Windows mouse capture for moving the pointer. I fixed the small problem that it had on here [8887], so it's okay too. However, I am still a learner too.
