RE: Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 firmware

There is a firmware update for all Hitachi Drive's under the Download section of the 8600/9100/XPS on Dell's Support Site. Dell indicates that this firmware update is to "Address an intermittent clicking noise issue"

This apparently just isn't for 8600/9100/XPS system's, it is for all Hitachi drives indicated below:

HGST HTS548020M9AT00 (20gb) Mobile HDD -5400RPM
HGST HTS548040M9AT00 (40gb) Mobile HDD -5400RPM
HGST HTS548060M9AT00 (60gb) Mobile HDD -5400RPM
HGST HTS548080M9AT00 (80gb) Mobile HDD -5400RPM
HGST HTS726060M9AT00 (60gb) Mobile HDD -7200RPM

Using Nero I copied the firmware files to a bootable cd and it ran like a charm. Windows will detect your drive as New Hardware, even though it is the same drive just different firmware. I haven't noticed any performance different but the clicking that I was worried about when I got the system is now gone.

sorry to be dumb, but what do you have to do. I can burn to bootable disk. what file do you have to burn. and then what? stick in in the cd drive and let the system run? Or select boot from CD?

sorry, just don't have any experience booting from disks or cd's....

Boot CD

I used Nero to create my boot cd. This is what I did:

1. Run the Dell executable that you downloaded and save it to a directory of your choice.

2. Start Nero and use the "Boot CD" option.

3. Nero will ask what files do you want to add to the disc, select the directory that you extracted the firmware update to in step 1.

4. Burn the CD

5. Reboot your computer and press F12 to select the boot menu.

6. Select CD/CDRW/DVD drive for your boot option.

7. Caldera DOS will start and bring you to a A:\ prompt.

8. Navigate to your CD/CDRW/DVD drive letter ie: D,E,F, etc.

9. Run autoexec.bat

10. Follow the on-screen instructions and your set.

If anyone has a better explanation, please post.

umm... Having trouble.

Everytime I burn the CD "autoexec.bat" is not on it. However everything else is. And when i try to reboot I still can't find autoexec (thinking maybe it was hidden or something stupid)

My CD drive is E, and yes, I changed the promt to E instead of just A. I can do that much.

But no luck on Autoexec.bat

I'm using Nero Ultra v.6 something. I used express mode to burn the "bootable" data cd. I'll try the regular rom next.

Any ideas why "autoexec.bat" won't show up on my CD after it's burned but everything else does?

Edit: I'm using memorex CD-RW for this. I don't see any reason that RW would make a difference but who knows. And it is new, just opened it.

Ok, still having trouble.

Autoexec is there. just hidden (unchecked "block operating system files" or something)

But still will not run

change the promt to E:\

The i tried enderting AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC and other variations of no caps and first letter caps with and without the .bat etc.

This is burned as a bootable CD once again. So what's going on? What am I doing wrong?

And yes, I want this done cause I have that annoying tick... grrr.

i used a thumbdrive and made it bootable by following directions on this website. fairly simple.

What files do you have listed in the e: directory?

i have no idea. i'm assuming there is some commnad to show everything but i don't know it.

All i did was unzip all of that stuff from DELL to a folder. Then I burned everything inside of that folder to a bootable CD. And everything did burn.

But once i got to the promt I couldn't do anything besides change drive letter.

EDIT:: i don't have time to read all about that thumbdrive link. But it states you need a floppy. I have NO floppy drive Can i get around this?

type dir in the e:\

that will list the files. write them down and list them on your post.

Thank you everyone for your help.

I finally found the problem and did it, now I just hope I don't have any more ticking.

The problem was the my CD drive was recognized as G instead of E. I have mulitple partition on my HD, all C,D,F,G . E is my CD drive, but for some reason the prompt thing had the CD as G.... I have no idea why.

Anyways, I never would have recognized that if it wasn't for Loaded so thanx man. It was probably something simple i should know, but at least i know now

No Problem, glad it fixed your problem.

o wow, maybe this is the solution for that clicking sound we all heard
post #15 of 40
maybe. i hope it is. but now i find myself listening really hard for the tick.... so i can't say if it's gone for sure or not yet. but no ticks yet.....

and mine did it at really odd times, so i don't know how to create or duplicate the effects. guess time will tell.

What did you guys use to burn the bootable image? Nero 5.5 isn't recognizing my NEC CD/DVD burner.

I get to the A:\prompt and then I'm stuck. how do you navigate to the drive itself, I type things and get unrecognized command. If the file isn't too big post an ISO image of the disc would be a good idea.
if you CD drive is the E drive then do this A:\E: hit enter and it should now look like this E:\

do that for whatever driver letter you want to do. Just the drive letter with a colon after it and it will change to that drive letter.

Hey guys, Im not ussually in this forum as I just bought a Sony Vaio s170 (the new "s type). However, it has the Hitachi Travelstar 5400 RPM 80gig drive.

I noticed that when I click on programs like word or explorer I hear the regular hard drive accessing noise (low level clicking), then I hear a series of slightly louder clicks that happen even after the program loads. They will click for like 4 or 5 seconds after the program is loaded then go away (until I do or click something else).

Is this the clicking you guys are experiencing?

The clicking occurs even when Im not doing anything.

But it ussually happens after I open something (after the normal drive access/program loading clicking).

Its kind of systematic, "chick..chick..chick..chick"....It has a rythm to it. There is like a half of a second between each "chick." And there will be like 7 "chicks" each time it does this.

Its also louder then the normal drive access/program loading clicking.

The clicking is primarily related to accessing files and programs. And once you're in programs, do you hear the clicking when your selecting things.

For instance when Im in word, and I click on file I'll hear a click. Also, when I open something like explorer, it will do its ussual (normal) clicking routine, and then after its done it will go into the odd systematic clicking for about 5 seconds "click, pause, click, pause, etc"

If this is the same problem, I wonder if your firmware update will work on my Sony.
