how to configure intel 2200bg in acer aspire 2012

yipee... just got my new 2012. n yes if cpu-z shows right it has dothan with 2mb L2 cache the screen is cool. yes the keyboard is a little odd placed and not that smooth too. there's no subwoofer. the placeholder is sealed with some rubber but still sound is good.

everything looks good but while configuring the wireless... the available properties for the intel 2200bg network adapter don't contain options for specifying the channel and SSID. can anybody help ??????

dead pixels on a wxga stick out like a sore thumb

Has any of you seen the Aspire 1681WLMI yet? I found it on newegg today for $1365. To me it looks very similar to the 2012WLMI, just $30 cheaper plus it also has built in Bluetooth. I am worried about the speakers though. They look awfully small. As I see this one comes with the Dothan.

wow.. i haven't seen that 1681WLMI before... seems really similar... the internal BT is a plus... anybody has this system?

sorry... no misinformation. it wasn't a dead pixel it was just a stuck pixel which returned to normal after some time

I'm happy for you yogi!

For future reference, sometimes if you have what looks like a stuck/dead pixel on an tft screen, lightly massaging the area sometimes helps to bring the pixel back to life. This only works sometimes, so nobody blame me if it doesn't work.... and be careful when massaging not to push too hard and damage the screen

DARN, the 1681WLMI is soo close

Well, I ordered one of these on Thursday of last week and got it yesterday.

The good points:

1. Incredible screen, one of the best I have seen
2. Very nice design, very nice looking
3. Great placement of ports (although since they are all on the right side it could get kinda' crowded)
4. Very nice keyboard, better thant most
5. Useful extra features keys and buttons
6. Sound is quite decent actually
7. Not too much extra garbage installed

The bad:

1. No bluetooth
2. Very low capacity 4 cell 2 hour battery

The product link on Newegg's site points to the Thailand version of this system, thus the incorrect information regarding the bluetooth and the battery life. If you look at the (JUST POSTED TODAY) info on Acer's USA web site, you will see there is no bluetooth and the battery life is listed as "up to 2.5 hours". From my expereince you would be lucky to get more than 1.5 hours out of that battery. With the power scheme set to max battery life and the screen on about half brightness I was down to 50% within about 38 minutes. That was just typing in notepad and browsing the contents of a CD. I called Acer and they confirmed that there was no bluetooth. They also said that there would be a higher capacity battery available soon for it but did not have specs on it.

Anyway, it is back to the drawing board for me. The battery life is totally unacceptable and now I have a bad taste inmy mouth for Acer and for the Newegg experience of no returns on laptops. It was a big ordeal to convince them to take it back based on the reality that they had bad info on their site.

I think I have to stick to laptops that I can return in case I don't like them since I am pretty picky. At least until I get closer to my ideal.

Oh, here is the link to the USA version specs in case you are interested. This is the unit you would recieve if you ordered one from Newegg, at least that was my experience.

bigbillyt - That's a real shame that you had to fight to get NewEgg to take back the laptop, especially since your purchase was based on their false information.

i'm sorry for you bigbillyt. it seems common about misinformation. even the pic of 2012 at buy.com and many other sites is of the 2000 or 2020 series. but a battery life of only 2 hrs is real bad.

i got around 3 hours on my 2012 with w/l on and burning 2 cds.

i don't know if it requires some setting somewhere but while writing an iso on a dvd-r i got only 1x as the available speed. newegg lists the write speed as 2.4X DVD+R, 2.4X DVD+RW, 2X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW, 16X CD-R, 10X CD-RW. The CD write speed comes fine with max 16x. Is there any tweaking needed or is it just like that? any experiences?????

In regard to the Dvd drive speed I burned a Dvd + and it burned at 2.4
have not tried any other burning

One more thing about the integrated intel 2200bg w/l. I am connecting to my netgear 11mbps 802.11b w/l router. while i get a constant 11mbps connection if using a pcmcia w/l card (d-link), the integrated w/l is connected most of the time at 5.5 mbps and keeps fluctuating between 5.5 and 11... !!!nothin in between... although it'll always tell the signal strength to be excellent. is it common with all 2012 or intel 2200bg??

yogi, u got a 1.5ghz dothan?

i just recd a 2012wlmi from cdw.com and it came with the banias.

that said , does anybody know what is the performance upgrade from a 1.5ghz banias to a 1.5ghz dothan?
which application would benefit most from it?

as it stands, this pentium M is the most awesome-read cool- processor i have experienced.

I actually had an acer 1711Sci p4 2.8ghz and it was blazing fast, but also hung up quite frequently. Not to mention that my mouse would become unbearable hot from the hot air that was bieng expelled from the ventilaton fan on the right side.
I had to return it after 40 days of use and recd the 2012 in exchange. I should have gotten this 2012 in the first place and I would not have to undergo all the data transfer from once notebook to the other.

cheers and enjoy!

am going with 1681LMI, Despite the fairly solid build of 2012lmi, I can't stand its keyboard ergonomic flaws, and going w/ 1681 will at least assure me a dothan. I do heavy amounts of typing/office stuff and the notebook will primaryly stay on a desk 90% of the time--I can't risk wrist pains & uncomfortable issues due to poor k-board placement. And of course, a redesigned chasis (about 8:2 metal to plastic ratio on the build quality--similar to 2020) should address most of the upgrade flaws and ventilation (not that it was bad) issues on previous notebooks. For upgrade, both memory sockets, including the processor are conviniently accessible at the bottom of the notebook (1681lmi)--no more pulling out the keyboard!!! To risky for my shakey hands...

I CARELESS about battery life provided my notebook will stay cool, which PMs def provide--a newer model w/ same chasis will be out in the future which will offer standard 8-cell. The UK version comes w/ 8-cell 5 hrs estimate:

http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page9...crc=1229986742

8-cell additional batteries can be bought from Acer (i believe imediately) if your notebook appeal depends on lenghty battery life...I don't envision gaming Doom 3 & Far Cry on freaking bat life...plug in and get the extra juice. Yes it is sad that a P4 battery scorching chip can get more batt. life, whats next from acer, a 2 cell batt. promising 30 minutes! Still, if you find it an issue, you can always opt for the higher cell batt.--it won't break your wallet.

bigbillyt & Others:
Can someone confirm the 3--1 Media reader???, UK model has it listed but not the US model. Both (including the TM4500 & TM4000 "curved keyboard" series) use the same chasis and most media readers are built INTO the chasis! Except if Acer actually chose to block the reader port entryway on the chasis of all US models--that'll be SAD!!!

Thanks...
