laptop crisis

I'm looking for the perfect laptop. It should be thin, mobile but also decent for gaming and last for at least a couple years.

specs:

1.7-2 ghz dothan (higher the better )
15" screen (sxga+ or uxga)
128 mb vid card
around 5 lbs (pref under 5)
battery life of 4 or more hours
combo dvd/cd-rw drive
802.11 b/g wireless

the ram and hd i can buy and put in, but i was aiming for a laptop at the 2000 range (w/out ram&hd)

i have my eyes on the arima m621dc model that is the savrow razor, which gigabyte is marketing as the n512 but they are really vague on when it'll come out...any other models out there that may solve my laptop crisis?

The CL56, sold everywhere, but i dont know what the price would be with a 2.0 dothan, those prices are ridicously high right now, the 2.0 cost almost as much as an FX-53

oh,, just saw that under 5 lbs thing, isnt the cl56 like 6.5?

You look like you plan to sacrifice RAM and HD for the 2.0 Dothan. Do you really think it would be worth it? I mean, for the price of the upgrade, I would prefer to put a high rotation HD (maybe a 7200 one). You didn't even mentioned the amount of RAM, which is, if not the first, but the second point in my purchase...

Yes. At least for what I know, I can't find some nb with more than 64 vram, 15" screen _and_ weighting less than 6 lbs...

The closest you can find is the T41, for the weight but not for the screen, (I think they replaced with the T42) with 14", 128 vram ATI FireGL... and the CL56, for the screen size but not for the weight.

Now, my opinion: go with the CL56. Will save you lots of money and the weight can be a fair trade-off. But you will find the keyboard of IBMs greeeaaat.

Or you still can wait and see what the Sager 3790 can do for you.

The 3790 looks u-g-l-y though.

I know, but it seems that not everyone has good eyes like us...

Seriously, I think looking is way personal... just that.

I don't think its worth getting a 2.0
a 1.7 might be good enough considering the price it costs for 2.0?
if you go for the specs in my sig, with less ram, I'm sure it'd be less than $2000 at most places

I found exactly the same configuration (but 2x512 instead of 1x1024) for $1710. Normally it will orbit around 1700-1900 with cheapest shipping.

Having looked around this thread a lil bit, I know how big people are on the CL 56. While I got no issues with that computer, I am also looking for a lighter computer to carry around if possible. I have the feeling that a new bunch of lighter 15" will be out within the next yr...I just don't wanna wait. And I'm not the biggest on the looks of the laptop.

That's where the arima m621 dc comes in for me:

15" (sxga+ now...soon uxga?)
128mb vid
1.7-2.0 ghz dothan proc (amd would be cool too but i'd need an extra batt)
combo drive
wireless
firewire (for ext hd)
battery life of 4.5 hrs

all of this weighs...2.25 kg = 4.95 lbs

Now I just found that I have a friend who is in Taiwan and he's gonna look into this model for me. I have a couple questions about this tho. Are there any other notebooks similar to this arima model that will be available now in Taiwan? And if I get a notebook from Taiwan will it be possible to get it warrantied here somehow? (For example through the Arima plant in Houston)
Also, would anything be available in Europe (spec. Switz or Italy)?

Thanks for all your help guys.

you'll find those specs in a dream

The Arima M621-DC only has 64MB of VRAM. Sweet system but just can't be found in the states. You can look for the Gigabyte N512 which hopefully will become available here soon. It is built by Arima and has all the same specs as teh M621-DC, just not quite as sexy.
At least it's not what they say at http://www.arima.com.tw/ViewProduct.asp?View=109

It shows 128 VGRAM. M11.

The point is that I don't think it weights 4.95lbs with every configuration that you put it on. Let's think: the minimun configuration is:

Celeron 1.2, 128 or 256 RAM, ATI M11 64mb, HD 20Gb.

The maximun is something at 1.7 Ghz or so, 128mb M11, HD 80Gb and 2Gb RAM.

Now, do your really think both systems weight 4.95 lbs???

I think it should be stated as "as low as 4.95 lbs". And even so, maybe it's just the barebones.

that's true, it prob does weigh more than 4.95 lbs when its fully configurated....how much more i dunno.

i mean, honestly i dont need a 15" screen, a 14" screen isn't really that much smaller in comparison. i just am not a fan of the 12" notebooks, those are too small.

also, i checked out some notebooks in person today and i must say that the sony xbrite screens are off the hook . does anyone kno of a light mobile sony vaio thats in xbrite 14" or 15", cuz the ones online are a bit heavier (the a series).

like i said, i'd appreciate anyone who has knowledge of the latest asian computers because i have a friend who can purchase one in taiwan.
