The good thing you can say is that the graphics is upgradeable. Most of who have the GPU's soldered onto the board are left high and dry.

Both seem like a daunting task. It took me a while to upgrade the videocard on my desktop last year

Exactly.....besides I remember that the laptop prices for AW soared even more when the upgradeable GPUs came out. I figure if at least you can upgrade and that is what you want then you should be happy, even if it is harder to do. Dell XPS costs like $1000 less than the AW and I'll keep that $1000 and take more time to upgrade if need be Then again I am not worried about upgrading as much at this point, because I don't like e-bay and what am I going to do with the old part?

What are you talking about dude? It is nowhere near $1000.

Dell XPS: $2,759, Alienware Area51m: $3,196.00... you need to pay for the much better case dude.

3.4Ghz, 1024MB RAM, mR9700, internal wireless card, XP Pro, remote, 60GB Hard Drive at 7200RPM , Creative Audigy 2NX External USB, 4x2x8x DVD+/-RW / 16x10x24x CD-RW

And For me Area51m is infact 300$ cheaper than the dell :P

Thats pretty kickass Dev.

We should appreciate the fact that both Dell and Alienware have upgradable GPUs for their laptops. This will make a huge impact on the notebook industry with their success. This will hopefully force the market to shift towards the upgradeable notebook GPU, which in turn will hopefully lead to more choices and maybe even a standardized laptop GPU hardware interface (PCIx?)

This all resulted with the demand for gaming laptops (5 years ago, who knew you could game well on a laptop?), which is a trend that is catching on with the manufacturers.

P.S. Dell XPS "top" recommended;
$4,379
$3,719

Area 51m "top" recommended
Was: $3,075.00
Price: $2,975.00

Here's a sort of 'biased' comparison of the Area 51m and the Dell XPS

The Area51m is a lot more attractive than thin than the Dell XPS. I guess no one told them that "Thin is In." No seriously, that thing is huge.
Yeah, biased or not, the side by side comparo on the Alienware sight really let's you get a feel for the XPS's "cinder block" styling.

AW vs DELL = Beauty vs the Beast
..dont forget about dells customer service...ive had both so far...Dell inspiron 8200 and a more recent Area 51m(2month old)...I gave my laptop in like a month ago, its coming on wednesday ....thats crap man...they are "testing"what the hell!!!..but dell is reallly quick....ive had that for 2 1/2 years...only had to give it 3 times, and everytime it was kept for maximum of 2 to 3 days..and came back like new ...so far from my exp. DELL IS SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER its not even funny...but this is just one guys experience. "BUT DELL IS 100% BLIND WHEN IT COMES TO STYLE , IF ONLY THEY HAD STYLE, ALIENWARE WOULDNT BE AROUND FOR THAT LONG"
No doubt Alienware's depot turnaround leaves much to be desired. Though they are smaller than Dell, that shouldn't be a catch-all excuse for shortcomings in their customer service.
Bad thing is, at least Dell is offering some decent video card upgrades.
Dell is also, for now at least, offering the fastest laptop video card available: MR9800. That was a smart move by Dell to get it exclusive. AW does kill Dell in the style department
post #20 of 58
and heres somthing real funny(not funny at all)...alienware considers their computers as a gaming device but dell is the one with the mR9800 for their laptops..hmm. "DELL should soooo get a new cover desginer for their computers, i mean what kinda of crackheaded drunk retarded people come up with those designs, the laptops look more like a cheap server than a expensive laptop, or maybe that all just me!!!
