Hi all

My notebook seems to have some trouble powering down. Usually, If I go to Start -> Shut down, Windows shuts down fine and the screen eventually goes black but I can still hear a fan running. To a casual observer, the the machine is off, but it isn't.

If I take out the battery and the mains, the fan shuts off. I'm not imagining things.

If there is no battery in the machine (running off the mains) and I click shut down, it powers down fine (no fan still running).

If I run the machine without the battery, put the battery back in, and shut it down, it usually powers down fine. If i use it for a while, though, it often lapses back into not powering down.

If the mains are not involved, it does not power down.

There aren't any power-related options in the BIOS (except for network bootup, which is disabled). There are no BIOS upgrades, and I don't seem to have an APM tab in Windows. In Device Manager it is listed as an ACPI-compliant PC and an ACPI Battery.

Anybody have any idea what the problem is here? Thanks!
