looking for a travel laptop

im going to be travelling alot around europe next year and am in need of a LIGHT and preferably small laptop with lots of battery power. Needless to say that rules the 2 sagers out of things. I will not be gaming all that much on this machine, but I wouldnt rule out the possibilty. Ive already got a beast of a desktop so this is purely a travel machine for email, getting digital pics onto and buisness. Ive been looking at centrino options, the acer 800 looks ok, but I hear it has crappy build quality. Does anyone know anything about the 15" powerpro centrino on powernotebooks? seems like someone should have put up a review here by now as it has the radeon and seems like a solid machine. ALso, the new fujitsu p5000 looks really great.

cant find any reviews of one yet though. It says 10.5 hour battery life, so is that more like 5? anyone know of an option ive missed?

I would get an Apple Powerbook or i-Book judging by your targeted applications.

Yes they are slightly more expensive but they are light, sexy, strong, have a superb OS, very nice software for your applications (music, digital imaging, email, business related stuff like MYOB etc.).

A combo of a powerbook and an i-pod is the best thing that can happen to you - my father will agree with me when I say this coz this is exactly what I bought him a few months back.

cant do mac, I need to run autocad which isnt processor intensive but dosent run on a mac. I hear the pc ipods are pretty good if you ditch musicmatch and get non proprietary software.

I would recommend an IBM Thinkpad T40P.

is the t40's cost justified? It configured at the bare minimum is close to other brands centrinos almost maxed out.

The IBM T-40 is the only IBM I can think of that retains the excellent build quality that used to define all IBM products in the past....

Yes it is expensive compared to the others and its a matter of personal choice...balance what features the IBM has that the others dont and then make a decision...

Its quite simple really...sooner or later you will start fixing on one laptop only...all others no matter how good just wont get you up and running like this one does Go and buy THAT laptop which does this to you...

till then research...research...research...

make a note of battery life, join forums to read actual user inputs and not the company projected performance data and battery life times...

One note on the D600, join the Dell Forums and see how many people are complaining the the wrist area heats up to about 130+ degrees. I guess they put the HD right under the wrist and didn't supply it with enough venting. Heard that the problem doesn't really exist on the D800 (larger and allowed more room for cooling)...

I have the following notebooks now:

Sager 8600
Thinkpad A22P
Thinkpad A31P
Thinkpad T40P
DELL 8100

The Thinkpads are definitely the BEST for

1) Portability,
2) Keyboard,
3) Screen,
4) Build Quality

The T40P adds

5) Battery life (I get 5+ hours on the standard battery with NO power savings enabled. When I add my Electovaya 160 external battery, I get almost 15 hours)!

The Sager 8600 is the best for "all-in-one"; that is, there isn't much else you can add.

Regards,

Shane
