Upgrading Acer 2012WLMi w/Dothan 1.8M

Just thought I would let everyone know that this is possible, and fairly easy to do with a few small screwdrivers.

Take the Banais out of the socket, put in the dothan. Wala your done. Put the laptop back together and turn it on.

Great to know. This is my next upgrade.

How much more does it heat up when pushed? Also, have you noticed a big hit in battery life?

BTW, where is the CPU? Is it accessable under the keyboard? A picture of where the actual CPU is and what screws you need to remove would be fantastic.

Gonna take some pics and post them. No difference in battery drain, actually its alittle better, since the dothan consumes less power. Performance is off the hook, will post the benchmarks too. I will also add that I have replaced the Hard drive w/Hitachi 7200 60GIG, I gig of DDR also. So ya this laptop is fast fast now.

And as far as removing the CPU is under the keyboard. First there are 3 screws on the bottom you need to take out first, then gently pry the top plastic part out, the take the screws out for the keyboard.

Here's your second paragraph with a few words mixed in...

I did a little write-up for swapping the memory out.

Sounds like you and I have the same idea... I just upgraded to 1Gb of memory yesterday... my Hitachi 7200RPM 60Gb upgrade just arrived today... and I was planning on a 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz upgrade in the next week or two.

Where is the CPU located? (using the above picture)

TIA.

Very nice! I might make an upgrade to a 2.0 when the time comes around. Good to know it's easy! Thanks for making the jump for us Ty.

It looks like the CPU heatsink is held down by the 4 screws above where the memory slot is. I would suspect that typically Intel uses a thermal pad. Jeff, you might consider using Arctic Silver for your new Dothan. There is a very detailed an excellent "How To..." at the Artic Silver site. Be careful not to scratch the heatsink surface which will contact with the Dothan. I do not know if there is a latch in or around the socket. I remember reading somewhere by Got-Chow in this forum that after he built his Compal, his system refused to boot because of a dead processor, another story about the system not booting because of CPU not seating properly.

Jeff, thanks again for sharing the picture showing the memory swap underneath the keyboard.

Thanks Husky. I'll probably use AS5 or Ceramique since I have a ton of both of them for my desktop hobby.

And here is a picture Tyspeed29 sent outlining where the CPU is...

Thanks Tyspeed29!

Let us know how it went. Anyone tryed installing the bluetooth module yet?
I would also be interested in a "How to.." for an integrated bluetooth module. This is the only thing that keeps me from buying this machine.

Is the modem/bluetooth card user accessible on the 2012WLMI? I'll try to find a place to get the card and let you know.

Hey man, thanks a lot for the tip.

I just ordered this laptop too! Hehehe, first-time buyer of a laptop, and I'm glad to know that I can upgrade it. Thanks!
