My 9100 specifications

Hi guys,

I'm about ready to order my 9100 this forum has been great help for me. What do you think of this specification?

Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
1024MB 400MHz DDR RAM (2 x512 MB)
1 Year European Collect and Return Service
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology (3.40 GHz, 1 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB)
15.4" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen SXGA+ TFT Display resolution: 1680x1050
80GB (7,200 rpm) Hard Drive
ATI® Mobility™ RADEON™ 9800 256MB, 8x AGP
Modular 8X DVD+RW Drive with Decoder Software
Dell Wireless 1450 Dual Band 802.11a/b/g 54Mbps Mini-PCI Wireless Card
Dell TrueMobile™ 300 Bluetooth Module

At the moment, the Dell site shows this config coming up to ~£1650, but I think the final price will be closer to £1700 because the site only has the option for a 4,200 rpm hard drive. I'm going to phone up tomorrow morning and get a quote for the system with a 7,200 rpm hard drive.

Any tips on how to haggle with the sales rep? Any particular tricks that work well in getting a discount?

I just spent 30 mins on the phone with Dell, talking to a sales rep and then (I think) his manager who was trying to tell me that Dell does not do a 7,200 rpm hard drive with the 9100.

I even cited that I saw a review of the machine which I want just yesterday saying that the 80GB hard drive is 7,200 rpm.

So now I'm off to find/scan the review in to email it. *sigh*

Just my opinion, but go with the XP Professional, and tell the sales rep that you will only buy one with the 7200 rpm hd, it makes a big difference in speed.

um the only 7200 rpm HD is 60GB. The 80's are 5400. Go do an online build, only the 60 has (7200 rpm).

There is no 80GB 7200rpm laptop drive offered by Dell, or anyone else for that matter, they are correct. There is however a 60GB 7200rpm drive, it will do you no good scanning and sending in a review because the drive just does not exist...

*cough*

That's what I meant. the review cites a 60GB 7,200 rpm drive.

Fair enough
It's a pain in the behind getting this drive in the UK I know, I have talked to several users at length about it. For some reason they just don't offer it for configuration even though most other places do, including the rest of Europe! Be persistent with them, they can make sure it is sent with one, most of those I have spoken to had happy endings

I'll do that! Will let you know what happens.

Have you thought about ordering your RAM from elsewhere. I just ordered my 9100 with the lowest ram possible (256mb) and will upgrade to 1gb from crucial. Last time I looked it saved me about $125 with the p/h included.

just my 2c

There is a "free double memory" promotion running, so I got 512MB for free

ETA: well, I will get 512MB free. I haven't been able to place the order yet. :P

Sound like a good system. It's basically what I have -- although mine has a 100 GB drive and 'only' 3,2 Ghz CPU. I'm sure you'll be happy with it!

I did consider the 100GB drive, but I decided a 7,200 rpm drive is more beneficial.

you are correct.

my old laptop (toshiba satellite) had a 5400rpm hard drive in it. My 9100 has the 60gig 7200rpm hard drive and I am VERY impressed with the decreased load times.

I'm still awaiting a return email from the weekend, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to try ringing up sales again and seeing if another sales rep can do what the others said isn't possible.

... and again I come to a deadend, but this time I'm told it's not possible to downgrade the standard hard drive size. the base 9100 model I'm looking at has a 80GB hard drive, which I wanted to see if he can downgrade to a 60GB 7,200 rpm drive. He told me it's not possible to downgrade components, but surely they can if the machines are built to spec?

I'm also wondering. Do the Dell sales people use a special configurator program, or do they just use the Dell website? I got told it's not possible to have 1 YR NBD International onsite, and it coincidentally matches with the Dell website which at the moment only lists 3 YR NBD. I swear I saw 1 YR NBD as an option on the site a few weeks back though?

I have a 1 year warr. on my 9100, strange that you can't get it.

also, the 60gig 7200 would be an UPGRADE from the 80gig.

1700 pounds is like 3100 USD that's alot of money for an i9100 isn't it?

Welcome to rip-off Britain

Yeah, prices over there are a bit higher. US gets the best, followed by Canada I would bet. Australia gets it OK, but still more expensive than NA. GB and Europe have it pretty tough for some reason.

I've gone ahead and ordered my notebook!

I also got free shipping on top of that in total, it comes to £1757.11. on the wallet, but notebook!

The delivery estimate is August 20, but I'm hoping it might come a little sooner than that!
