No, I didn't remove any heatsinks or fans. The CL56 doesn't have active cooling on the GPU at all. The only thing that cools the core is the metal plate that the keyboard sits on. If you remove the keyboard, on the metal you'll see a small square outlined in the metal. Underneath that is a thermal pad which touches the core of the 9700. It just spreads the heat a little bit onto the metal support plate. The RAM has no cooling at all really.
I'm guessing that the CPU fan also has some effect. When it blows air out, it's gotta pull air in from somewhere, and I'm guessing the PCMCIA slot, Kensington keylock hole etc. So there is SOME airflow going through the laptop, although not a whole lot.
My clock speeds were done on a flat table with no additional cooling, but my room was pretty cool then, about 70*F
