Dell in India

Well guys I am expecting my Dell I9100 to arrive today (hopefully)

I came upon this forum only after I placed my order with Dell for the I9100, but the information provided in this forum really helps to understand the various options available with dell.

Like I never knew that I9100 can also have a bluetooth card and be bluetooth enabled. I ordered the card seperately after getting the information from this Forum.

Well if it helps the specs are:
Dell Inspiron 9100
3.0GhZ Processor
512 MB Ram
DVD/CD-RW
64MB MR9700 Graphic card
15.4" USXGA Screen
80 GB HDD

I am not so sure about the memory of the processor but I think it is 1MB Cache.

and the cost for the above system is about 2200 USD.

This price is much more than what you guys are paying in US but compared to Indian Standards it is ok. There are no Coupon System in India and the Sales Reps are not allowed to bargain. Like they can not give anything free with the system or give any discounts.

So for all its worth I think you guys are much better off regarding the prices and promotions Dell is offering in the US.

But anyway Dell is still offering the best configuration for Desktop replacement Systems in India.

Thanks for the information guys and I will also post more to this post once I have my system with me.

Also this is the first forum where I can see such cool Smileys... the reason I put them besides the specs of my system.

Well I got my Dell not on the as I expected but one week after that ... guess its the courier service in India.

The Ssytem is as good as it can get in India. The configuration I have is one of the best available in India.

I will be buying the DOOM 3 soon but the games I alreay have with me work perfectly fine with this system.

Hi Suryad,
I am in New Delhi in India. The games I generally play are strategy games like Age of Mythology, Civilization 3, C&C and such games. I had played DOOM I but then since the system requirements were more for subsequent versions I have not played them.
Well where in India are you from and what course are you persuing in CA.

lol i doubt you could do that.. ..

I kinda agree with you.. the IT market in india for desktop replacement systems ( or desktops for that matter ) isnt too great... i mean .. a branded desktop 70,000 Rs????? W00t! i know its coz of the weak indian currency but still.. paying 70,000 for a desktop sounds ridiculous

Well for one it is the price of the Notebook or the Desktop PC which is high then it is the taxes and duties which make the price even higher. Then again the margin that the retailers in india keep are also more than what they would have in US. This is because there are not many ppl in India who would buy such expensive notebooks.

Then in US the companies have a system of Discount coupons and all which is not there in india. There are at times free upgrades like I had the offer for double the memory I order but that is all there is.

For Rs 70000 you would get an average notebook in india like the configuration I mentioned in the beginning it is 2200 USD i.e. about RS 98000.

Well yes I stay in india but the way i look at it I dont have much of an advantage, rather I would say it is a disadvantage. The reason I say this is because..

after going the posts in the dell forum I see that the competetion, to sell high end or for that matter any laptop, in US (or Europe) is higher than what is there in India. Due to this the offers that Dell and other retailers are giving in these countries is far more attractive than what they are giving in India. Like XPS systems have never been launched in India and would never be launched coz there would never be so much of a demand for it here.

Then although you are calling Dell representatives in India the representatives handling sales in india are different from those handling sales in US or Europe. Hence the sales techniques are also different. Like in India the Dell representative would never bargain or give anything free. In india there is no exchange policy once the system is delivered to you, weather you like the system or not. If a system has some problems then you send it to Dell and repaired system will be sent to you at your expense.

Thirdly the choice you get here are quite limited. Dell offers only some of the upgrades available in US. Compaq has a total of 4 laptops to offer in India and these can not be customized. Simmilar is the case with IBM and Toshiba or other competetors. Dell has a monopoly when it comes to customizable systems.

you can also see the efforts put by Dell in designing the Indian website and the US website. You have to call Dell to get the price of anything you want. Prices are not there on the website as such.

Well there can be many more comparisons one can give here but all I am saying is that as a function of demand and supply and the market conditions I would prefer to be in US to buy something like a laptop.

PS I compare everything to US above coz I think that in Europe also the conditions will be the same.

Well put jaingaurav. I noticed that when I was poking thru the Dell India site. The few listed prices seemed a bit high, but I dont know if the RP is trading weak or strong.

indian rupee is weak... 1 usd = 45 rupees... so if u want a branded desktop ( say an HP ) u'd pay 50,000-70,000 rs..

I agree with jaingaurav... I always buy my laptops from the US.. its the best place to buy stuff from.. i especially like the return policy .. great country america!!!
