IBM T42 vs. HP NC8000 (comes down to support?) - Page 2

Trackpoint is my favorite feature of my Thinkpad.

Well, my problem is that I tend to use TWO hands to use touchpad (or trackpoint). Index finger on right hand to navigate, and a finger on left-hand to select. I fully realize that you are supposed to use your right thumb to select, but I never can get used to it. If I could, then trackpoint might be easier for me to use.

I'm 90% sure I will be buying a T42p in the next few weeks. 14" screen version. All I can say is: 5.4 lbs, 1" thick, 6.5h battery life with a dedicated graphics card. Case closed.

Lucky You! How much are you paying?

So, does anyone want to say:
"So, were you born uncoordinated"??
(or anything like that)

OK, I got bored and decided to make fun of myself!!!

Well, if you're making fun of yourself, just think what we can do! Seriously, this waffling is driving me insane. 14.1/15 and HP/IBM and which models within those lines ... ahhhh ... insert maniacal laughter here.

What waffling?????
I am purchasing notebooks!!
(not sure which I will keep, but...)
Seriously, if I lived in Manhattan, I could go to J&R Music, and other places and see all the IBM notebooks. But, in Austin, Texas the only way to see any of them is to order one. And why order one, and never know what the other looked like. At least I know for sure I don't want an X31...I could NEVER do just the trackpoint only.

It is the manufacturers (IBM and the HP business line) that decided that they want to have no retail presence for their business line. So...I will order a few, and pick one. No problem.

A couple months back there was a guy on this forum who had purchased about 15 notbooks and returned all of them during the 30 day trial. Not sure his name, but someone here will know for sure. I think he held the world's record. I will need to order no more than 4. Well....maybe 5 tops!! As long as my credit card holds out, I am fine!!

It is NOT totally free. It cost me $100 to get the two T42's shipped to me, and will cost about $20 each to return one (or both) of them to IBM. So, if I reject them both, it will be about $130-$140 cost.

MY waffling ... flipping around like an idiot on what system is "right" for me. The amazing bit is I bet that I could damn nearly flip a coin, and whichever system came up heads would work splendidly ...
Well, whatever you are doing is EXACTLY what I did for months.
Finally decided that, since HP and IBM allow 30 day returns, that I would order a few, and return all but the one I like best.

So far, are you tolerating your 14" SXGA+?

As far as support goes yesterday I just read an article in either PC Mag or PC World (forgot which) about PC vendors support. IBM by far beat all other vendors, especially with the Thinkpad notebooks. IBM is the only company that does not outsource tech support, every tech support call is routed through Atlanta GA.
I myself can vouch for this, I had a Thinkpad A series notebook for over 4 years and never had a single problem with the Thinkpad itself. I did once get a bad ram module from Crucial that caused my Thinkpad to crash. and when I called IBM tech support my call was answered in one minute by a knowledgeable guy who found the problem immediately.
You just can't go wrong with IBM notebooks, they are way ahead in quality and support of any other Notebook PC vendor.

Not sure yet. Comparing it to the 15" SXGA+ right now.
You were absolutely correct about graphics not being enlargeable, thanks for pointing that out. Basically, just trying to see what I can comfortably live with.

HP Business line support is not outsourced.
